Bible ReadingPhilippians 1:12-26Verse 12: “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually advanced the gospel,”
[06:37]Verse 13: “so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is because I am in Christ.”
[09:12]Verse 14: “Most of the brothers have gained confidence in the Lord from my imprisonment and dare even more to speak the word fearlessly.”
[10:51]Verses 15-17: “To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. These preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment.”
[12:56]Verse 18: “What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice”
[19:33]Verse 19: “because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ.”
[21:20]Verse 20: “My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death.”
[22:55]Verses 21-24: “For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don’t know which one I should choose. I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ—which is far better—but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.”
[23:09]Verses 25-26: “Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that, because of my coming to you again, your boasting in Christ Jesus may abound.”
[31:58]Philippians 1:3“I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you,”
[04:33]Philippians 1:21“For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
[23:09] [38:10]Observation questions- What details in verses 12-14 show that Paul’s imprisonment affected both the imperial guard and other believers?
- What two different motives for preaching Christ does Paul identify in verses 15-17, and what did the selfishly motivated preachers hope to cause Paul?
- In verses 18-20, what repeated concern seems to guide Paul’s joy, courage, and hope? [20:13]
- What two sources of help does Paul name in verse 19, and what does that show about how he is facing prison? [21:20]
Interpretation questions- Paul calls his chains an advance for the gospel rather than merely a bad situation that might someday improve. What does this suggest about the ways God can work through hardship? [08:51]
- Paul rejoices even though some people are preaching Christ from envy and selfish ambition. What does Paul’s response show about the difference between caring about Christ’s name and protecting a personal platform? [19:33]
- Paul says that the prayers of the Philippian church and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ will sustain him. Why might Paul see dependence on both Christ and the church as strength rather than weakness? [21:40]
- “To live is Christ and to die is gain” does not mean Paul is indifferent to life. How do verses 22-26 show that Paul sees continued life as fruitful because it serves other believers? [31:58]
Application questions- What circumstance in your life have you quietly treated as proof that God is not working? How might the question, “Is Christ being made known through this?” reshape the way you look at it? [33:38]
- When life becomes difficult, where do you most often look for peace: better circumstances, more control, a plan, financial security, or Christ? What does that reveal about what is carrying the most weight in your life? [02:44]
- Paul’s prison cell became a platform for Christ. What limited or difficult place in your life—work, family, illness, uncertainty, or disappointment—might become a place to show faithfulness to Christ? [10:22]
- Is there someone whose success, influence, or recognition makes it hard for you to rejoice, especially when you question their motives? What would it look like to care more that Christ is truly proclaimed than that you receive the credit? [20:38]
- What is your personal version of self-sufficiency: work ethic, emotional control, savings, competence, being needed by others, or something else? In what way have you asked that good thing to carry what only God can carry? [34:36]
- Paul openly needed the prayers of believers far away. Who is one trusted Christian you could honestly tell this week, “I need you to pray for me”? What has made it hard to ask for that kind of help? [35:19]
- Paul’s hope for remaining alive was the progress and joy of others in the faith. Where might God be inviting you to use your time, gifts, or presence to help another believer grow in faith? [32:14]
