Hardened Hearts

Hebrews 3 sets believers in front of a real danger: faith can get rocked by hardship, and a heart can begin moving back toward old ways. Hebrews has already given the needed commands: pay careful attention to what has been heard, and fix thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of the confession. The text then reaches back to Psalm 95 and to Israel in the wilderness, because those forty years were written down as examples and warnings, not as distant history.

The Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” God speaks now, not only back then. God warns, instructs, convicts, calls, and presses for response today, because spiritual procrastination is one of the quiet ways a heart begins to drift. The word “today” strikes against the habit of putting off obedience, repentance, changed attitudes, restored relationships, and simple submission to what God has made clear.

The heart stands at the center of the warning. God is after the heart, not bare religious motion. Proverbs calls the heart the wellspring of life, and Hebrews says to see to it that no sinful, unbelieving heart turns away from the living God. A hardened heart does not usually become hard all at once. Disobedience after disobedience can make a person start blowing off God until unbelief feels normal.

Israel’s story shows the danger clearly. God spoke promises, revealed his name, showed his power, sent plagues, parted the sea, provided manna and quail, and brought water from the rock. Yet the people complained, grumbled, quarreled, and tested God again and again. Miracles did not change a stubborn heart. God was angry with that generation because their hearts were always going astray, like a star out of orbit, and they did not know his ways.

Hebrews presses the same warning onto believers under grace. Grace is real, mercy is new, and Christ saves, but God is not passive about sin in his children. The living God disciplines sons and daughters because he loves them too much to overlook hard-hearted unbelief. A heart is either drifting slowly farther from God or becoming tender, responsive, and submissive as it obeys. Today, as the Spirit speaks, the call is not delay, but listening ears, repentance, and a tender heart before the Lord Jesus.
