The Hard Hand of Grace | Pastor Sean Scribner

Amos 4 puts a hard question in front of suffering people: when life brings the storm, the diagnosis, the shortfall, the broken relationship, will hearts return to God or keep resisting him? God names hunger, drought, blight, locusts, plague, war, and ruined cities, and the repeated line lands with real weight: “Yet you did not return to me.” These were not random judgments or punishment for punishment’s sake. The covenant itself had warned Israel that rebellion would bring curse just as obedience brought rain, harvest, peace, and the presence of God.

The covenant curses reveal the why behind the pain. God used tangible afflictions to wake stubborn hearts, humble people who had cut themselves off from the source of life, and save them from their own destructive path. God’s hard hand was not opposed to his love. God’s holy love was pursuing wayward children, calling, inviting, pleading, warning, and disciplining them toward life.

Sin explains why such drastic medicine is needed. Sin is not merely bad things that otherwise good people occasionally do. Sin runs down into every inclination, affection, appetite, thought, and desire. The bent pages of a book can expose the same heart turned in on itself, even when outwardly doing the right thing. Human beings bear God’s image and therefore make real moral choices, yet grace must awaken, convict, draw, and empower the will to say yes.

Israel’s tragedy was not that God failed to give enough grace. Israel received grace upon grace and still refused to return. Amos therefore warns that grace can be resisted, and that patient discipline must not be wasted. “Prepare to meet your God” stands as a sober warning to hearts that will not repent.

Christ brings the deepest answer to covenant curse. Galatians 3:13 declares that Christ became a curse so sinners could return to God. The cross shows salvation through affliction, not because suffering is good in itself, but because God entered suffering to redeem what sin had ruined.

Hardship remains part of the Christian life, not only to awaken the lost but also to grow grace in those already walking with Christ. God’s aim is not mere comfort, happiness, or escape from the fire. God intends holiness, communion, and conformity to Christ. The hands that shake mountains are the scarred hands of the cross, strong hands and good hands, able to form and reform every part of life.
