The plumb bob keeps asking one question: where does the line hang from? Jesus says all the Law and the Prophets hang from loving God with all the heart, soul, and mind, and loving the neighbor as oneself. God is love, and His nature is the source that gives everything else its true alignment. A person can be settled, confident, passionate, and still be wrong if that person is hanging from the wrong source.
The heart reveals its source through the mouth, actions, decisions, and fruit. “Be true to yourself” can sound fine, but self cannot be the beam that holds the line. Christ must be the source. The real test is whether words and behavior carry the heart of the Father, whether they show sacrificial love, and whether they leave judgment where it belongs.
Jesus rejects Satan’s offer because the mission matters more than power, comfort, or outcomes. Peter tries to protect Jesus from suffering, but Jesus protects the mission. Peter’s intentions are understandable, yet human concern becomes an adversary when it stands in front of God’s purpose. Paul also once stood passionately against Jesus, convinced that he was right. Sincerity does not make a person plumb.
Jesus brings the Shema and the command to love one’s neighbor back to the center. Politics, denominations, family names, wounds, comfort, biblical knowledge, and even personal convictions can become false sources. Those things may be part of life, but none of them can hold the line. Jesus holds the line.
First John refuses to separate love for God from love for people made in God’s image. A person cannot praise God and then curse those whom God has made. Correctness without love puffs up, but love builds up. The woman caught in adultery shows that even a technically true reading of the law can be handled wrongly when mercy is left out. The feet of Jesus are the place where sinners need to be thrown, not merely the feet of Moses.
Galatians gives the evidence of right alignment: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Fruit is the proof. Anger, contempt, fear, arrogance, obsession with enemies, and a lack of self control reveal that the line has moved away from Jesus.
Jesus gives the hardest test in loving enemies. The flesh can love people who agree, vote alike, belong to the same tribe, or pull on the same side of the rope. Christ calls His people to lay down their lives, love enemies, and continue His mission of making enemies into family. The foundation stone remains Jesus, and everything built in life must rise straight from Him.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The source determines the alignment God does not merely ask for strong conviction. God asks where that conviction is hanging from. A person may be completely steady and still be steady beneath self, fear, tribe, or comfort instead of beneath Christ. The right source changes what comes out when life gets bumped. [02:27]
- 2. Good intentions can oppose God’s mission Peter wanted to protect Jesus, but Jesus had come to fulfill the Father’s mission through suffering, death, and resurrection. Human concern can look loving while still blocking what God is doing. Christ calls for humility whenever personal instincts stand against His purpose. [09:06]
- 3. Love cannot be separated from truth Scripture does not allow love for God to coexist with hatred toward brothers and sisters. Truth handled without love becomes noise, pride, and a weapon against people made in God’s image. Love does not discard truth, but it keeps truth anchored in the character of Jesus. [27:19]
- 4. Fruit reveals what holds the line The fruit of the Spirit is not a decorative addition to Christian life. Love, peace, patience, gentleness, and self control show that a life is actually hanging from Christ. Persistent contempt, fear, rage, and arrogance call for an honest examination of the source. [32:29]
- 5. Enemies expose the heart’s true throne The flesh already knows how to love friendly people and despise opponents. Jesus calls His followers to pray for enemies because the Father gives sun and rain to both the righteous and unrighteous. Love for enemies shows that Jesus, not tribe or self preservation, sits on the throne of the heart.
