God holds “the whole world in his hands,” and that old song becomes more than something sweet to sing at bedtime. God’s hands include little bitty babies, nations, families, and people who feel forgotten. God also chooses to use the hands of his people, so that the church becomes part of how his care reaches the world.
Jesus gives that identity in John 13: love one another as he has loved his disciples. Love becomes the way people know who belongs to Jesus. The church is not responsible only for itself, because God consistently leans toward widows, orphans, immigrants, hungry people, outcasts, and all those without someone beside them. The church becomes the backup family God provides when life gets hard.
Jesus shows what that love looks like in Luke 4. Jesus proclaims good news to the poor, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. Jesus does not stop at a lecture about God’s love. Jesus sees people, touches people, feeds people, heals people, welcomes people, and crosses boundaries for people that others overlook.
Mission belongs first to God. God is a missionary God who moves toward creation and responds to need. Mission is not an extra activity for church people with a little spare time. Mission is part of the family business, because belonging to Jesus means belonging to his missional family. The church does missions not to become the church, but because it already is the church, the hands of God.
John Wesley Missions seeks to care for whole people, because people are not divided into neat little categories. Spiritual care matters, but hunger, shutoff water, empty gas tanks, unsafe homes, and exhausted families matter too. NAM, TEAM, Meals on Wheels, Yeager Elementary, Hope Center Houston, Blue Barn Blessings, and other ministries put hands under neighbors who need help standing up again.
Mission also changes the people who serve. God gives eyes to see the child carrying burdens, the teacher beyond exhausted, the homebound neighbor who needs someone to know their name, and the woman living in fear on the streets. Kenya reminds the church that people are not mission projects or statistics. God’s kingdom is bigger than a church, a city, Texas, or even a country, and the same Jesus holds every face in his hands.
Jesus gives a different measure of a blessed church. Buildings, attendance, and budgets can serve good purposes, but love reveals whether Christ is at the center. God invites his people to begin somewhere small, perhaps with a prayer, a jar of peanut butter, a half hour of mentoring, or hands ready to serve.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Mission is God’s family business. Mission does not begin with a church calendar or a volunteer need. God moves toward human need because mission is an attribute of God himself. Belonging to Jesus places every disciple inside that missional family, where love becomes part of ordinary identity rather than an optional add-on. [47:31]
- 2. Whole people need whole care. Holistic care refuses to separate a person’s soul from an empty pantry, an unpaid water bill, or the gas needed for a job interview. Practical help does not compete with the gospel when it comes from Christ-shaped love. Physical care can become the hands beneath a person’s life, making visible that God has not abandoned them. [50:24]
- 3. Mission gives eyes to see. Service exposes realities that are easy to miss from a distance: fear, vulnerability, exhaustion, hunger, and shame. Jesus repeatedly saw the people others passed by, including the leper, the blind, the grieving, and the outsider. God changes the heart of the servant by bringing that servant close enough to see Christ’s image in vulnerable people. [67:43]
- 4. Love measures a blessed church. A blessed church cannot finally be measured by square footage, attendance, or budget strength. Jesus identifies love as the visible evidence of discipleship. Christ at the center produces hands that bless others, especially those who have little power to repay the care they receive.
