Matthew places Jesus in the wilderness right after the glory of His baptism, when heaven has opened, the Spirit has descended like a dove, and the Father has declared, “This is my beloved Son.” The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness, but the devil brings the temptation. God does not tempt anybody, nor can God be tempted, yet God remains God in the wilderness and can prepare a table right in the presence of enemies.
Satan watches for weak places, waiting for hunger, exhaustion, disappointment, and those moments after spiritual victory when the heart is most vulnerable. Satan watches people, but the Lord watches over people. The devil is a powerful created being, an adversary, an accuser, and a slanderer, but he cannot act independently of God’s permission. God sometimes lets the enemy think he has gained an advantage, only to show His power and prove that His children can still give Him glory.
Jesus handles the problem of the devil by trusting God with provision. The tempter sees Jesus hungry after forty days and tells Him to turn stones into bread. Jesus answers with what is already written: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Bread represents food, substance, money, jobs, pensions, and all the things people tend to trust. God calls His people to trust Him rather than trusting the company, the government, or the wallet.
Jesus also trusts God with purpose. Satan takes Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and tries to make Him prove His identity through a dramatic display. Jesus refuses to step outside His assignment just to answer the devil’s challenge. Purpose does not need to perform for people, and identity does not need to prove what God has already settled. Jesus came to save His people from their sins, not to impress the enemy.
Jesus finally trusts God with praise. Satan offers kingdoms and glory in exchange for worship, but Jesus commands him to leave: “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” Praise belongs to God alone, not money, people, fame, fortune, or shallow thrills. The Word of God remains the weapon for handling the devil problem, speaking truth over personal lives, families, the church, and even enemies.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The wilderness does not cancel God. The Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, showing that hard places do not mean God has abandoned His children. God did not cause the devil’s temptation, but God remained present and powerful in the place of testing. The wilderness can become the very place where God shows His glory when strength is gone. [65:42]
- 2. God provides more than bread. Jesus refused to let hunger make provision into an idol. Bread can look like money, employment, security, or the next thing needed to survive, but none of those can sustain the soul like God’s Word. Faith grows when physical lack does not get the final word over spiritual confidence. [76:58]
- 3. Purpose refuses to perform for Satan. Jesus would not jump from the temple just to prove He was the Son of God. God-given identity does not need to answer every challenge, satisfy every demand, or impress every audience. Purpose stays with the assignment, even when distractions come dressed up in Scripture and religious language. [82:15]
- 4. Praise belongs to God alone. Satan’s final offer exposed the real issue: who receives worship. Money, people, status, and success cannot carry the weight of praise because all of them will pass away. Jesus remains worth more than silver and gold because life itself depends on Him. [92:26]
- 5. The Word handles the devil problem. Jesus answered every temptation with “It is written,” not with panic, self-protection, or human argument. God’s Word must be spoken over weak places, families, enemies, and the church. Even enemies can drive deeper prayer and remind the believer that victory belongs to God.
