Hallowing God's Name: Reverence and Authenticity in Prayer

Summary

In today's exploration of the Lord's Prayer, we delve into the profound significance of the word "hallowed." This term, though seemingly archaic, carries a weight of reverence and sanctity that Jesus intended for his disciples to grasp deeply. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he wasn't merely providing a formulaic introduction to get to the "good part" of prayer. Instead, every word, including "hallowed," was intentional, urging us to focus on God's holiness and majesty.

The English translators of the Bible chose to retain the word "hallowed" because it encapsulates a depth of meaning that words like "holy" or "sacred" might not fully convey. This choice underscores the importance of approaching God with reverence, acknowledging His holiness, and recognizing His sovereignty over all aspects of our lives. Jesus' instruction to begin prayer with "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name" is a call to prioritize God's glory above our own needs and desires.

Reflecting on the nature of God as both our Father and a holy being invites us into a relationship that is intimate yet reverent. It challenges us to examine our own lives and the authenticity of our prayers. Are we merely performing for others, or are we genuinely seeking a private, sincere connection with God? This relationship is not about eloquence in public prayer but about the authenticity of our private devotion.

Furthermore, the call to hallow God's name extends beyond prayer into our daily lives. It is about living in a way that honors God in every situation, whether at work, in relationships, or in the face of life's challenges. By putting God's glory first, we align our lives with His will, allowing His holiness to shine through us as a testament to the world.

Day 1: Reverence in Prayer
The word "hallowed" in the Lord's Prayer serves as a profound reminder to approach God with deep reverence, acknowledging His holiness and sovereignty. This reverence is not just a formality but a recognition of God's supreme authority and majesty. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He emphasized the importance of starting with an acknowledgment of God's holiness, setting the tone for the entire prayer. This approach encourages believers to focus on God's glory and majesty before presenting their own needs and desires. By doing so, we align our hearts with God's will, recognizing that He is in control of all things. [09:15]

Isaiah 6:3-4 (ESV): "And one called to another and said: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!' And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke."

Reflection: In what ways can you intentionally cultivate a sense of reverence for God in your daily prayer life, acknowledging His holiness and sovereignty?

Day 2: Authenticity in Devotion
Jesus emphasizes the importance of sincere, private prayer over public displays of piety. The authenticity of our relationship with God is not measured by eloquence or public recognition but by the genuine connection we cultivate in the quiet moments of personal devotion. This authenticity challenges us to examine our motives in prayer and to seek a relationship with God that is intimate and sincere. It is in these private moments that we can truly open our hearts to God, free from the distractions and expectations of others. [06:20]

Matthew 6:6 (ESV): "But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Reflection: Consider your current prayer habits. How can you create a more authentic and private space for your personal devotion to God today?

Day 3: Prioritizing God's Glory
Before presenting our needs, we are called to prioritize God's glory in our prayers. This approach aligns our hearts with His will and acknowledges that His purposes are greater than our immediate desires. By focusing on God's glory first, we shift our perspective from self-centered requests to a God-centered relationship. This prioritization helps us to see our lives in the context of God's greater plan and to trust in His wisdom and timing. [14:11]

1 Chronicles 16:28-29 (ESV): "Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness."

Reflection: How can you intentionally prioritize God's glory in your prayers today, even before presenting your own needs and desires?

Day 4: Living to Honor God
Our daily actions should reflect a commitment to honoring God's name. Whether in work, relationships, or challenges, we are called to live in a way that glorifies God, recognizing that our lives are a testament to His holiness. This call to honor God extends beyond prayer into every aspect of our lives, challenging us to align our actions with His will and to be a light to the world. By living in a way that honors God, we become instruments of His holiness, allowing His glory to shine through us. [16:06]

Colossians 3:17 (ESV): "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Reflection: Identify one area of your life where you can more intentionally honor God through your actions today. What specific steps can you take to align this area with His will?

Day 5: Transformation through Relationship
A genuine relationship with God leads to transformation. As we hallow His name and prioritize His glory, we open ourselves to His transformative power, allowing Him to work in and through us for His purposes. This transformation is not just about personal growth but about becoming a vessel for God's work in the world. By cultivating a deep and authentic relationship with God, we invite His presence into our lives, allowing His holiness to shape us and guide us in fulfilling His purposes. [25:16]

2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV): "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."

Reflection: Reflect on your current relationship with God. How can you open yourself more fully to His transformative power in your life today? What changes might you need to make to allow His holiness to work through you?

Quotes

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he wasn't saying, okay, let's get to the good part, right, give us this day our daily bread, like that's the good part. No, no, no, every word that he said he meant, and he addressed his disciples. He wanted them to pray in a way that would focus solemnly on God. [00:01:08]

The English translators, when they did the Lord's Prayer, they said, you know what, we're going to keep this word hallowed, and it's only found two times in the New Testament, in Matthew and in Luke. In the Old Testament, especially the King James version, you can find many of these words, but they chose to keep this word when they translate it into English. [00:02:42]

Jesus addresses his crowd, his disciples, and he says this is how you ought to pray. If you have your Bibles, I'm reading from the NIV version, and we're reading Matthew 6:9-15, and this is the word of the Lord: This then is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed Be Your Name. [00:03:51]

The Hypocrites, what do they do? They pray out loud in the middle of the park, in the middle of the street for everyone to see. This is not just Jesus addressing that you should not pray like that. The point that Jesus is making is that so many times, and I've seen this happen before, they pray beautiful words inside the church. [00:05:24]

Go into your closet in your private, close the door behind you, and then you pray, meaning that you are now having a moment with God, not for anybody else to see, but having that moment that you can now pray. I know that I talk to our people on a regular basis. [00:06:36]

For them, every time they heard the word hallowed, they remembered the Holiness of God. Yes, God is our father, but he is also holy. Probably one passage that we actually read earlier, they probably went back to Exodus when God created the Heaven and the Earth, and what did he do? He hallowed, he blessed the last day. [00:08:06]

Reverence means acknowledging God's holiness. Every time you say Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed Be Your Name, you're acknowledging that he is Holy. Do we acknowledge that on our daily basis? Do we many times fail to realize that God is in absolute control of everything of our lives, our problems, our situations, our health? [00:09:15]

When you break down the Lord's Prayer, and we will look at this throughout the next couple of weekends, there is petition in there, right, give us this day our daily bread. Notice how Jesus doesn't start with that right away. Hey, our father, give us our bread, we need it, I'm hungry. No, no, no, no, Hallowed be your name first. [00:13:38]

When we put God's glory first, we say I don't have the power to solve this, but you do. I'm coming to you with reverence, with awe, and I want to make sure that I adore you before anything else. Because when we do that, and this is not just a model that, okay, if you do this in a certain way, then God will answer your request. [00:14:11]

Living to honor God's name. A question here without raising your hand, but how many of us can say that we live to honor God's name every day of our lives? Honor God's name working at a factory, how? Honor God's name as I'm studying, how? Honoring God's name as I'm doing housework, how? [00:16:06]

We must know that people around us, situations around us, can be put there by God to test us. Not that we can come on the other side feeling good about ourselves or thinking that we are that much holier than we were before, but in everything we do, glorify his name, honor his name. [00:18:32]

If his name is to be hallowed on Earth as it is in heaven, it must first be hallowed in your life. If the world ought to see who Jesus is, many of them will only look at your life. We're going through the 30-day of prayer for the Muslim world, and it's interesting. [00:22:29]
