“``What were they thinking? What are we to make of this story? Why is it even in our bible? Some people might ask. After all, we're interested in Abraham and Sarah, you know, the the Isaac, Abraham's son with Sarah, the father of Jacob, also known as Israel. That's the one we're akin to. Right? So this story is only extraneous to our story of salvation as Christians. Isn't that right? don't think so. I think it's here for us as part of the larger story of God's salvation. Think about it. Not just because it's connected to the main characters, Sarah and Abraham, but because it is part of the overall theme of God's mercy and God's providence to all people of every nation, every race, and every lineage, that God is on everyone's side.”

“Why can't we all just get along? Here's when the Holy Spirit comes in and takes charge. Here's the power that we don't often enough claim for ourselves. The power Holy Spirit gives us to love the unlovable. The grace to forgive the unforgivable, to have compassion and mercy on the undesirable, the power to stop worrying about what's in it for me or how am I going to get what God has promised me. To stop focusing on me, me, me, and what is mine and start focusing on God and what is God's.”

“God can work with circumstances even when we've messed them up. God's grace is not just for a chosen few. It's for those outside the mainstream as well. We divide we divide people into desirable and undesirable, good and bad, acceptable and unacceptable, who's in and who's out. God's grace, however, reaches all. In fact, it reaches all of creation. Sarah and Abraham were called to live as God's chosen family, God's community, but they failed miserably even in their own home, in their own household.”

“We don't hear that much these days, do we? I think it's also the story for us of how God's people can utterly fail to internalize God's gift of salvation and its scope, and they actually can cause harm and do more harm than good and become God's opponents. If they don't look closely and listen closely for God's word. It's the story of how God is able to save, heal, liberate those who need saving, healing, and liberating in spite of God's chosen people. That would be us.”
