Paul carries the Ephesian Christians from the picture of a state, through that of a household, to the supreme picture of a holy temple. The church is not merely a company of fellow citizens, nor even only a family of separate persons. The building shows a closer unity, for stones cannot be removed and remain a building at all. Paul’s “fitly framed together” declares that Christian people belong to one another in a union which is organic, vital, and necessary.
The holy temple also brings the privilege to its highest point. Children have access to the Father, but the temple reveals something greater still: God himself dwells in the midst of his people through the Spirit. Christ does not remain merely external, to be heard and questioned from without. Christ comes to dwell within, and the Father takes up his abode in the church. The church is therefore the habitation of God, the place where his presence is manifested in the world.
Paul presents this building as a process still going on. God, the eternal Architect, has his plan and specifications, and throughout the ages he is quarrying stones out of the world and adding them to his great edifice. History appears confused when read merely by secular eyes, yet the biblical view sees God building his church steadily and certainly. The foundation of God standeth sure, and every stone chosen for that building shall be placed within it.
The word “groweth” guards the whole conception from becoming mechanical. A building ordinarily does not grow, yet this building is made of lively stones and is a living, dynamic reality. Church membership may be increased by human means, statistics, pressure, or even bribery, but only God through the Holy Spirit builds men into his holy temple. Mechanical union between organizations can produce a large institution, but it cannot produce the unity of the Spirit.
Holiness stands as the temple’s chief mark. Paul says nothing about size, wealth, ornament, influence, or worldly success. The temple is holy because it is meet for God to dwell in. A church may possess silver and gold, organization and prestige, and yet fail to be the church of the living God if holiness has been forgotten. The unity of holy people is the only true unity, because holiness excludes what cannot dwell with God.
The Trinity governs the whole reality of the church. Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone and the Lord in whom the building grows. God the Father inhabits his temple, and the Holy Spirit brings that divine dwelling to pass. The church must therefore make Christ central everywhere, for no unity, no church, and no access to God exists apart from him.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The church is a living temple. Paul refuses a merely mechanical idea of the church. The building “groweth” because its stones are living stones, joined by the Spirit’s own work. Human arrangements may enlarge an institution, but God alone makes a people into his habitation. [33:46]
- 2. Holiness is the church’s chief mark. The holy temple is not measured by numbers, money, power, or public influence. God does not dwell in a flourishing business concern merely because it bears a Christian name. Holiness makes a people fit for the presence of God and creates the only unity that can endure. [37:16]
- 3. Christ stands at the center everywhere. Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone, the sphere in whom the building is joined, and the Lord in whom it grows. Any fellowship that can function without Christ at its beginning, foundation, and end may accomplish social good, but it is not Christian. Christ is not an addition to the church; Christ is its entire ground. [41:47]
- 4. God builds with sovereign certainty. God is erecting his great building across generations, sometimes through revival and sometimes by adding one stone here and another there. The world may appear to be governed by confusion, yet the eternal Architect has neither lost his plan nor forgotten one of his people. The certainty of God’s purpose gives dignity to every true believer’s place in the building.
