Bible ReadingGalatians 5:19-24 “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
[01:06:45]John 21:15-17 “When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Feed my lambs.' He said to him a second time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Tend my sheep.' He said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?' Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, 'Do you love me?' and he said to him, 'Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my sheep.'”
[01:16:46]Matthew 23:4 “They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.”
[01:28:04]1 Corinthians 5:1-6:20 “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? But you yourselves wrong and defraud—even your own brothers! Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 'All things are lawful for me,' but not all things are helpful. 'All things are lawful for me,' but I will not be dominated by anything. 'Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food'—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, 'The two will become one flesh.' But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
[01:44:08]Observation questions- In Galatians 5, what contrast does Paul make between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit?
- In John 21:15-17, what does Jesus ask Peter three times, and what three tasks does Jesus give him in response? [01:17:08]
- What picture helps explain how guilt gets in the way of conversations, work, study, and relationships? [01:13:19]
- In Matthew 23:4, what are the religious leaders doing to people, and what are they unwilling to do for them?
Interpretation questions- If true guilt comes from a real wrong that can be named, confessed, and forgiven, how does that help a person tell the difference between healthy conviction and a vague sense of shame? [01:12:20]
- In John 21, why might Jesus have answered Peter’s failure not only with questions, but also with fresh responsibility? What does that suggest about how restoration works? [01:18:05]
- Matthew 23:4 describes burdens being laid on people’s shoulders. How can religious pressure or family pressure create false guilt even when no sin against God has been committed? [01:28:40]
- When the question is asked, “What precisely did I do wrong?” why can that be such an important question for exposing false guilt? [01:38:08]
Application questions- Is there any area right now where true guilt has been carried like a knapsack out in front—something specific that needs confession, an apology, or a change in behavior? [01:13:29]
- Peter’s failure did not cancel Peter’s calling. Where might failure still be speaking too loudly in a person’s life, making that person feel sidelined when Jesus may be calling that person forward again? [01:16:15]
- The confession may be hard, but the relief afterward is often sweeter than the secret. Is there a hidden thing, even a small one, that has been quietly affecting closeness with God or with someone else? [01:25:48]
- False guilt often grows from expectations God never gave. Are there any recurring thoughts that need to be tested instead of automatically believed? Which thoughts belong in the mind, and which belong in the wastebasket? [01:34:14]
- Has there been a time when saying no, setting a boundary, or disappointing someone produced guilt that felt moral but really was not? What made that situation hard to sort out? [01:35:15]
- “What precisely did I do wrong?” can be a freeing question. Where might that question need to be asked in a current relationship, responsibility, or internal struggle? [01:38:15]
- Freedom from guilt brings power to love, serve, and obey again. If a burden were truly laid down, what might become possible again in prayer, relationships, ministry, or daily life? [01:19:33]
