Guided by the Spirit: Navigating Life's Decisions

Summary

Life is a series of decisions, and as adults, we often face decision fatigue, feeling overwhelmed by the choices before us. Yet, as believers, we are reminded that God has a plan for our lives, a plan greater than our own. The challenge lies in aligning our decisions with God's plan, and this is where the Holy Spirit comes into play. The Holy Spirit, often referred to as the Counselor and Helper, is sent by the Father in the name of Jesus to guide us into all truth. Understanding and recognizing the Spirit's voice is crucial for living a life that glorifies Jesus.

To make guidance a part of our everyday life, we must first listen. Listening involves being attentive to God's Word and the Holy Spirit within us. It's about recognizing His voice amidst the noise of the world, much like a child recognizing a parent's whistle. However, listening is just the beginning. We must also evaluate what we hear. This involves testing the spirits to ensure they align with God's Word, as Satan can disguise himself as an agent of light. Community plays a vital role here, as fellow believers can provide counsel and affirmation.

Once we have listened and evaluated, we must go and do. This means moving forward in faith, trusting that Jesus has our best interests at heart. We are free to make choices, knowing that God will never lead us into sin. Our obedience is not measured by the outcome but by our willingness to be guided by the Spirit. Even when life doesn't go as planned, we can trust that God is with us, guiding us toward His kingdom.

In my own journey, I have experienced the challenges of discerning God's voice and the importance of community and perseverance. Despite setbacks and trials, I have learned that God's guidance is not about achieving specific outcomes but about remaining obedient and faithful. As we listen, evaluate, and act, we are led by the Holy Spirit into a life that glorifies God, beyond anything this world can offer.

Day 1: Attentive Listening to the Holy Spirit
Listening to the Holy Spirit is the first step in receiving divine guidance. It requires being familiar with God's Word and being open to His voice in our daily lives. This involves a willingness to hear even when it challenges our comfort zones. Just as a child recognizes a parent's whistle amidst the noise, believers must learn to discern the Spirit's voice amidst the world's distractions. This attentiveness is not passive but an active engagement with God's presence, inviting His guidance into every aspect of life. [07:52]

Isaiah 30:21 (ESV): "And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left."

Reflection: In what specific area of your life do you need to quiet the noise to better hear the Holy Spirit's guidance today?

Day 2: Testing and Affirming Spiritual Guidance
Evaluating what we believe the Spirit is saying is crucial. This involves comparing it with Scripture and seeking counsel from fellow believers. God will never contradict Himself, and community provides a safeguard against deception. Testing the spirits ensures that we are not led astray by false teachings or our own desires. By grounding our understanding in Scripture and the wisdom of the community, we can confidently affirm the Spirit's guidance in our lives. [10:55]

1 John 4:1 (ESV): "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."

Reflection: Who in your community can you turn to for wise counsel when discerning the Spirit's voice, and how can you reach out to them today?

Day 3: Moving Forward in Faith
Once we have listened and evaluated, we must move forward in faith. Our obedience is not measured by the outcome but by our willingness to follow the Spirit's guidance. Trusting that God will never lead us into sin, we can confidently make choices, knowing that His plan is greater than our own. This faith-driven action is a testament to our trust in God's goodness and His ultimate plan for our lives. [15:03]

Hebrews 11:8 (ESV): "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going."

Reflection: What is one step of faith you can take today, trusting that God is guiding you, even if the outcome is uncertain?

Day 4: The Role of Community in Spiritual Guidance
Christianity is not meant to be lived in isolation. We are part of a body of believers, each with the Holy Spirit active in our lives. Community provides support, counsel, and affirmation as we seek to follow God's guidance. Engaging with fellow believers allows us to share burdens, celebrate victories, and discern God's will together. This collective journey strengthens our faith and deepens our understanding of God's purpose for us. [18:20]

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (ESV): "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!"

Reflection: How can you actively contribute to your community of believers today, offering support and seeking guidance in return?

Day 5: Trusting in God's Greater Plan
Even when life doesn't go as planned, we can trust that God is with us. Our decisions, guided by the Spirit, lead us closer to God's kingdom. We are free to make choices, knowing that God has a plan greater than we can imagine. This trust in God's sovereignty allows us to navigate life's uncertainties with peace and assurance, knowing that He is working all things for our good and His glory. [21:40]

Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV): "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to trust God's plan, and how can you surrender it to Him today?

Quotes

If you are a believer, then Scripture tells us that you have the Holy Spirit inside of you. The Spirit leads and guides. It's called the counselor and helper. But how do we know the Spirit? How do we become familiar with the Spirit? We might feel more comfortable talking about God the Father or Jesus the Son, but the Spirit is a little too mystical for us. The world will tell you that this is the right way to live and America has fallen into an individualistic worldview that you can make any decision for yourself and as long as it's not affecting somebody else, you can do that. It's your life, your money, your house, your family, your car. It's your choice. [00:08:31] (22 seconds) Edit Clip

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God for they are folly to him. He is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things but is himself to be judged by no one for who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him. But we have the mind of Christ. We can test, we can affirm, evaluate what we believe the Spirit of God is saying to us. And this is important because in 2 Corinthians it talks about Satan being able to mask himself as an agent of the light. So there is a conflict. We will have confusion but God is not a God of confusion. [00:10:23] (22 seconds) Edit Clip

You were made to be living in community to live with other believers who also have the Holy Spirit active and working in their lives that they may bring evaluation, they may be able to guide through the Holy Spirit. At Boulder Mountain we believe this. We make disciples as we help people find and follow Jesus. [00:12:14] (22 seconds) Edit Clip

Guidance comes from those that have the Spirit of God inside of them, and bring your decisions with honesty and humility. You can come to your group of believers and say, Hey, I really want this. I know that this will be more money. I know this would probably be more fun. This is the decision I hope for. [00:14:30] (17 seconds) Edit Clip

When we move forward in faith and we seek to listen and we evaluate and we do, and God gives us an answer, then we have confidence knowing that we have brought our decisions to him. And if he doesn't give us an answer, then we can still move forward with confidence that we walk by faith that Jesus is still with us. [00:18:35] (25 seconds) Edit Clip

To wrap up, I'll leave you with this. The difference between my relationship with the Spirit and being pushed around in a shopping cart is that I can decide, and my steering wheel does work. I can continue on and make decisions for myself that benefit me, but the Spirit of God has somewhere that He wants to take you, and it's somewhere that's beyond anything of this world.
