Guided by the Holy Spirit: Understanding God's Truth

Summary

In our journey through 1 Corinthians, we explore the profound truth that the Holy Spirit is our guide to understanding God's Word. Just as a minimalist world map can be confusing until someone points out its features, so too can the truths of God seem hidden until the Holy Spirit reveals them to us. Our conduct within the family of Christ is significant, and it is through the Holy Spirit that we learn to live in a way that honors God. The Holy Spirit teaches us that God's Word is true, not just as a collection of ancient texts, but as the living, breathing testimony of God. This truth is central to our faith and is the answer to life's biggest questions.

Paul's message to the Corinthians emphasizes that the gospel is not about lofty speech or human wisdom but about the power of the Holy Spirit. The gospel message answers the fundamental questions of existence, purpose, and destiny. It is a mystery revealed, a hidden wisdom now made known through Christ. The answer to all of life's questions is not found in Christ; the answer is Christ himself. This is the testimony of God, the messianic message that Paul entrusted to the Corinthians and to us.

Understanding God's Word as true involves engaging with apologetics, the practice of defending our faith. There are various approaches to apologetics, including presuppositional, ecclesiastical, spiritual, and evidentialist methods. While evidentialist approaches are often effective in discussions with non-believers, Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit's role is crucial for believers. The Spirit indwells us, teaching us and confirming the truth of God's Word.

The Holy Spirit's work in our lives includes regeneration, illumination, and sanctification. Regeneration is the new birth, the transformation that allows us to see and understand spiritual truths. Illumination is the Spirit's guidance into all truth, revealing the depths of God's wisdom. Sanctification is the ongoing process of becoming more like Christ, as the Spirit shapes us from the inside out.

As we reflect on these truths, we are encouraged not to be disheartened when non-believers do not understand our faith. Salvation is not our responsibility but God's work through the Spirit. We are called to be faithful in proclaiming the gospel, trusting the Spirit to illuminate and transform hearts. In our prayers, we should seek the Spirit's illumination and sanctification, asking God to make us more like Christ and to reveal His truth to us.

Devotional

I'm ready to provide the 5-day devotional based on the steps outlined. Here it is:

---

Day 1: The Holy Spirit as Our Revealer
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in unveiling the truths of God's Word, much like how a hidden image becomes clear once pointed out. This revelation is not just about understanding the gospel but also about living a life that honors God. The Spirit guides believers into a deeper comprehension of the Scriptures, transforming them from mere ancient texts into the living testimony of God. This understanding is essential for navigating the complexities of life and aligning one's conduct with the teachings of Christ. The Spirit's revelation is a continuous process, inviting believers to seek His guidance daily. [36:40]

1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (ESV): "These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."

Reflection: Consider a truth from God's Word that you find difficult to understand. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to reveal its meaning to you today?

Day 2: Christ as the Answer
The gospel message provides answers to life's biggest questions by presenting Christ Himself as the answer. This profound truth is central to the Christian faith, shaping believers' understanding of existence, purpose, and destiny. The message of the gospel is not about human wisdom or eloquence but about the power of the Holy Spirit revealing Christ as the ultimate solution to all of life's mysteries. Embracing this truth requires a shift in perspective, recognizing that the answers we seek are found in a relationship with Christ, not in worldly knowledge or achievements. [43:25]

Colossians 2:2-3 (ESV): "That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

Reflection: Reflect on a question or challenge you are currently facing. How can you seek Christ as the answer rather than relying on your own understanding?

Day 3: The Role of the Holy Spirit in Apologetics
Apologetics involves various approaches to defending the Christian faith, but the Holy Spirit's role is crucial for believers. While evidentialist methods can be effective in discussions with non-believers, the Spirit indwells believers, teaching and confirming the truth of God's Word. This indwelling is essential for spiritual growth, as it empowers believers to defend their faith with confidence and clarity. The Spirit's presence assures believers of the truth of the gospel, enabling them to engage in apologetics with humility and reliance on divine guidance. [50:29]

1 Peter 3:15-16 (ESV): "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame."

Reflection: Think of a recent conversation where you had to defend your faith. How can you rely more on the Holy Spirit's guidance in future discussions?

Day 4: The Transformative Work of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit's work in believers' lives includes regeneration, illumination, and sanctification. Regeneration is the new birth that allows believers to understand spiritual truths, while illumination guides them into all truth. Sanctification is the ongoing process of becoming more like Christ, as the Spirit shapes believers from the inside out. This transformative work is a testament to the Spirit's power and presence, encouraging believers to seek His guidance and submit to His leading in every aspect of their lives. [01:00:10]

Titus 3:5-6 (ESV): "He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior."

Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you need transformation. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to work in this area today?

Day 5: Trusting the Spirit in Evangelism
Believers are encouraged not to be disheartened when non-believers do not understand their faith, as salvation is God's work through the Spirit. The role of believers is to be faithful in proclaiming the gospel, trusting the Spirit to illuminate and transform hearts. This trust in the Spirit's work allows believers to share their faith with confidence, knowing that it is not their responsibility to convert others but to be faithful witnesses of Christ's love and truth. [01:06:42]

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (ESV): "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case, the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

Reflection: Think of someone you have been sharing the gospel with. How can you trust the Holy Spirit to work in their heart while continuing to be a faithful witness?

Quotes

Paul is very deliberate there. Even the word, you know, he is saying this mystery. The knowledge of this mystery, which is Christ. He's not saying Christ has the answer. He's saying Christ is the answer. This mystery that's revealed to us, this hidden knowledge, the answer is not found in Christ. The answer is Christ. [00:44:03] (23 seconds)

This is usually the tack that I take when I teach apologetics. We go through like physics and stuff. We talk about historical record. We talk about a burden of proof, like you were arguing in a courtroom. And we look at things that if you were talking to a neighbor, a coworker, a classmate, a friend, a family member, who is skeptical, who does not believe these things, you can start at things, that you can both observe to be true, and then say, I'm making an argument for why I believe God's word is true. [00:49:32] (35 seconds)

What he is saying, more than anything else is, the way that you all know God's word is true is because his spirit lives inside of you. And he himself teaches us that God's word is true. The Holy Spirit himself teaches us that God's word is true. In fact, he gets explicit in verse 10. These things God has revealed to us through the spirit. [00:56:55] (34 seconds)

This is in line with what Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit. The night before he died, Jesus spends a long time with his disciples teaching them these things, and a lot of it centers around the Holy Spirit. If you look at John 16, this is what he's saying about the helper, the spirit of God who is going to come after Jesus's ascension. [00:58:10] (25 seconds)

But even before this act of illumination, there is another role that the Holy Spirit plays in our life. And in fact, we understand this, again, a lot through what Jesus himself teaches to people, and that is an act of regeneration. Regeneration just means made to come to life. This is the role of the Holy Spirit. [00:59:48] (27 seconds)

The Holy Spirit, in addition to teaching us. In addition to giving us new life that we have to have in Jesus. The Holy Spirit sanctifies us. By giving us the mind of God that we might become more like Jesus. Now pause for a second and think. Without hurting yourself. About what I just said. I mean, he gives us the mind of God. What? [01:05:11] (27 seconds)

Don't fret when non-believers don't understand your faith sometimes we can get so frustrated so offended how can they not get it guys it is like a blind person not being able to see you would not see you would not see you would not see you would not see you would not be upset with a blind person that they cannot see don't fret this is what Paul is talking about when he says to the Corinthians look it is folly to them they don't get it that's okay so don't fret don't get offended don't worry in fact I would even say expect there to be certain parts of your life of your conduct and of your belief that just do not make any lick of sense to your neighbors or co-workers or classmates or even family sometimes the things that we do or say or believe or proclaim in the truth of the gospel of Jesus are absolute madness to those that are outside of his family and that's just how it is and it's okay second relax [01:06:42] (65 seconds)

We pray before the service each week, and I was so blessed this morning. Somebody prayed that God's spirit would open up God's word to me as I teach. And you know what? I need that prayer. That's a wonderful prayer. I really appreciate that. I really appreciate that. I pray that you, I hope that you would pray that for me. I hope that you would pray it for yourselves. Why? That's the only reason any of us can understand God's word. Because his spirit is illuminating it, is teaching us what is true. Pray for that to happen. [01:10:54] (37 seconds)
