If we're not careful, the weight of life can harden our hearts. Bitterness and disappointment and unforgiveness start to settle in. That's why Solomon warns us, above all else, you must guard your heart. It is not an option know it is a necessity. How do we keep our hearts soft when life tries to make them hard? Here are a few practical tools that have helped me. Number one, stay rooted in God's Word. [00:03:17]

Spend time daily in scripture, not just to check a box, but to let it shape your heart. Psalm 119, 11 says, "'I have hidden your word in my heart, "'that I might not sin against you.'" Number two, process your heart. your pain with God. Don't bury your hurt. Take it to God. David was called a man after God's own heart and yet if you read the Psalms he was brutally honest with God. He poured out his frustrations, his fears, his disappointments. We need to do the same. Healing begins when we bring our brokenness to the healer. [00:03:50]

Next point is surround yourself with a healthy community. Isolation is dangerous. When we're hurt, our instinct is often to pull away. But Proverbs 27 17 says, As iron sharpens iron, so one person's shape sharpens another. You need people who will speak life into you. who will pray for you, and who will remind you of God's goodness when you forget. Number four, practice forgiveness. [00:04:30]

This one isn't easy but it is necessary. Holding on to unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer. Jesus calls us to forgive not because people deserve it, but because our hearts need it. Forgiveness doesn't mean excusing what happened.
