Guarding the True Gospel of Grace

Summary

### Summary

Today, we began our journey through the book of Galatians, focusing on the Apostle Paul's passionate plea to the churches in Galatia. Paul is astonished and deeply troubled that the Galatians have turned away from the true gospel of grace and have embraced a distorted gospel brought by false teachers known as Judaizers. These Judaizers insisted that adherence to the Jewish law was necessary for salvation, thereby undermining the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.

Paul's message is clear: the gospel he preached is not from man but from God. His authority as an apostle comes directly from Jesus Christ, who revealed Himself to Paul. This divine revelation is the foundation of Paul's teaching, and any deviation from it is a serious matter. Paul emphasizes that the gospel is about grace—God's unmerited favor—and peace, a complete reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ. This grace is not something we can earn; it is a gift from God.

Paul's frustration is palpable as he addresses the Galatians' quick desertion of the gospel of grace for a gospel of works. He reminds them that the law was given to reveal sin, not to save. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not through human effort or adherence to the law. Paul warns that any gospel contrary to the one he preached is a false gospel and should be rejected.

In our own lives, we must guard against the temptation to add to the gospel or to rely on our own efforts for salvation. We must hold firmly to the truth of God's word, recognizing it as the ultimate authority. Our works are the fruit of our faith, not the means of our salvation. As we continue to study Galatians, let us be reminded of the incredible gift of God's grace and the peace that comes from being reconciled to Him.

### Key Takeaways

1. The Authority of Scripture: Paul's authority as an apostle comes directly from Jesus Christ, not from human sources. This underscores the divine origin and authority of the gospel message. We must recognize that the Bible is not a collection of man-made ideas but the inspired word of God. Therefore, we should treat it with the utmost respect and allow it to guide our beliefs and actions. [22:59]

2. The True Gospel of Grace: The gospel is about God's unmerited favor—grace—and the peace that comes from being reconciled to Him through Jesus Christ. This grace is a gift that we cannot earn through our own efforts. It is essential to understand that our salvation is entirely dependent on God's grace, not on our adherence to the law or any human effort. [28:32]

3. The Danger of False Gospels: Paul warns that any gospel contrary to the one he preached is a false gospel and should be rejected. False gospels lead to theological confusion and spiritual destruction. We must be vigilant in guarding the purity of the gospel, ensuring that we do not add to or distort the message of grace. [42:33]

4. The Role of the Law: The law was given to reveal our sin and our need for a Savior, not as a means of salvation. It shows us that we fall short of God's glory and drives us to depend on His grace. Understanding the purpose of the law helps us to appreciate the depth of God's grace and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice. [36:58]

5. Living Out Our Faith: Our works are the fruit of our faith, not the means of our salvation. Genuine faith in Jesus Christ will naturally produce good works as a response to God's grace. We must hold firm to the truth of the gospel and live out our faith with conviction and courage, always pointing others to the grace and peace found in Christ. [49:54]

Devotional

Day 1: The Divine Authority of Scripture
The authority of Scripture is foundational to our faith. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that his message and authority come directly from Jesus Christ, not from human sources. This underscores the divine origin and authority of the gospel message. The Bible is not a collection of man-made ideas but the inspired word of God. Therefore, we should treat it with the utmost respect and allow it to guide our beliefs and actions. Recognizing the Bible's divine authority helps us to remain steadfast in our faith and avoid being swayed by false teachings. [22:59]

Galatians 1:11-12 (ESV): "For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ."

Reflection: How can you prioritize reading and studying the Bible this week to better understand its divine authority and allow it to guide your daily decisions?

Day 2: The Gift of Grace
The true gospel is about God's unmerited favor—grace—and the peace that comes from being reconciled to Him through Jesus Christ. This grace is a gift that we cannot earn through our own efforts. It is essential to understand that our salvation is entirely dependent on God's grace, not on our adherence to the law or any human effort. Embracing this truth brings freedom and peace, as we realize that our relationship with God is based on His love and mercy, not our performance. [28:32]

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV): "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Reflection: In what ways have you been relying on your own efforts for salvation or approval? How can you shift your focus to fully embrace God's grace this week?

Day 3: Guarding Against False Gospels
Paul warns that any gospel contrary to the one he preached is a false gospel and should be rejected. False gospels lead to theological confusion and spiritual destruction. We must be vigilant in guarding the purity of the gospel, ensuring that we do not add to or distort the message of grace. This requires discernment and a deep understanding of the true gospel, as well as a commitment to reject teachings that deviate from it. [42:33]

2 Corinthians 11:3-4 (ESV): "But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough."

Reflection: Are there any teachings or beliefs you have encountered that may distort the true gospel of grace? How can you seek God's wisdom to discern and reject false gospels?

Day 4: Understanding the Role of the Law
The law was given to reveal our sin and our need for a Savior, not as a means of salvation. It shows us that we fall short of God's glory and drives us to depend on His grace. Understanding the purpose of the law helps us to appreciate the depth of God's grace and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice. This perspective shifts our focus from trying to earn God's favor to resting in the completed work of Jesus. [36:58]

Romans 3:20 (ESV): "For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."

Reflection: How has your understanding of the law and grace changed over time? How can you deepen your appreciation for God's grace and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice this week?

Day 5: Living Out Our Faith
Our works are the fruit of our faith, not the means of our salvation. Genuine faith in Jesus Christ will naturally produce good works as a response to God's grace. We must hold firm to the truth of the gospel and live out our faith with conviction and courage, always pointing others to the grace and peace found in Christ. This involves daily surrender to God's will and a commitment to reflect His love and truth in our actions. [49:54]

James 2:17-18 (ESV): "So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, 'You have faith and I have works.' Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works."

Reflection: What specific actions can you take this week to live out your faith and demonstrate the grace and peace of Christ to those around you?

Quotes

1. "The peace that God gives is greater than the peace we see out here. It's a peace that's deeper, it's complete, it's full, that never wavers. So, Lord, whoever we're coming in, maybe we've been just kind of feeling some anxiety, we've got worries, we've got things we're carrying around, burdens, and God, you're a God of peace. You're a God who says, cast your burdens on me. So, God, we're just going to throw it off today. So, we can put you on. Your grace, your presence, your strength." 2. "Paul's heart, as one who was far from God, is now moved to bring the gospel to those who are far from God, the non-believers, the Gentiles. Because he is so amazed by the grace of God. He is so taken by the grace that is his, that he doesn't deserve. I mean, he was on the exact opposite. He was the enemy of Christ. And so, when he finds out that the church of Galatia has gone to the law, how do you think Paul felt? Did he feel disappointed? Frustrated? Some passion? Mad? I mean, it may be mad and angry at the Judaizers or any of the people. And I think the answer is yes. To all of it." [18:08] (55 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "Paul is reminding them, look, look at these incredible gifts that come from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. These gifts that only come from God. You can't create these gifts. You can't win these gifts. You can't earn these gifts. There's nothing you can do on your own to have these gifts. These are gifts that can only be bestowed by you by God. And yet, if you do not have these gifts, what Paul is kind of leaning into, if you don't have these gifts, then you are bound in this evil age to be part of evil." [29:02] (31 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4. "You can't sin enough and you can't sin bad enough that's greater than God's grace. So there's always, even in our brokenness when we rebel, we can return because the peace of God through Jesus Christ is there. And notice this, he says, to God's glory. Salvation is done to give glory to God. We're being saved is a glory to God, not to us. Not in us. It's to Him. And Paul, puts the big emphasis to say amen. It's not just, hey, conclude a prayer and say, yes, this is certain. And yes, this is certain for me and for you, for all of us." [33:01] (45 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "They're leaving a relationship with God and trading their relationship for religion. Which really means they're separating from God and relying on self. And this is why Paul says, look again, he says, I am astonished that you are quickly deserting Him who called you in the grace of Christ and turning to a different religion. Not there's another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. I mean, you're leaving this incredible relationship with God who saved you, gave His favor and grace, I mean, peace, and you're leaving that to try to create your own?" 6. "God uses the law to do the same thing. You're not going to do something unless you know you know or care enough that you know it's wrong. It's not good for you. Or you've heard enough. I've been doing life my way and doing it in a way I like it. I've been living in this sin and it's finally brought me to a place where I heard enough. It's not working out. I don't know what works. There's got to be a better answer. Where is it? And God says, it's here. I wrote, I created you. I wrote the book to help you. And I can deliver you from your mess and yourself that keeps taking you down the wrong roads and give you a better life." [41:05] (37 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

7. "False gospels lead to theological confusion. They lead to spiritual destruction. And if people are taught they must earn God's favor in the law, they miss the very heart of the Christian message. And this is where people miss it and they say, you know what? All paths are just the same to God. It doesn't matter. Because Christianity starts to look like a religion instead of what it is. A relationship. Christianity starts to look like what I have to do to earn God's favor instead of God who came to us to give us favor with Him as a gift." 8. "We are saved by grace. Our works are the fruit of faith. I mean, this argument of works and grace, this has been a tension point in the church. It still is today. It's what splits churches apart because we can't just let grace be grace. And the early church had the same battle. Not just in here in Paul, but we see it go to Acts. We're looking at these believers, the Jews are, these Gentiles, these people that weren't Jews now becoming believers. And they're saying, do they need to follow the law or not? Do they need to follow all these traditions or not?" [49:54] (34 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "The moment we introduce human effort or requirements as necessary for salvation, we strip the gospel of its power. We lessen God. God can only do so much. He needs us to participate. He needs us. He needs us to do something in order for us really to truly be saved and be genuine followers of Jesus. No. It's God's grace that gives you relationship. It gives you peace. You do nothing. You are passive in it. It's His work to His glory." [51:15] (31 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

10. "Faith is a gift and no man can boast. Our faith is not for our glory. It's for His. And so we want to protect, honor, and proclaim the Christ crucified. And if we're going to boast, we boast, we boast all the more about Christ who was crucified, who gave a gift of grace and peace. Let's be hearts of church. Amen?"
