Guarding the Mind: Spiritual Warfare and Truth
Summary
In Ephesians 6:10-13, Paul exhorts believers to be strong in the Lord and to put on the whole armor of God to withstand the devil's schemes. The devil's attacks are multifaceted, targeting both the church collectively and individuals personally. Today, we focus on the devil's personal attacks, particularly on our minds. The mind is a primary battleground because it controls our understanding and actions. If our minds are led astray, our entire being follows.
One of the devil's tactics is to lead us into intellectualism, where our relationship with Christian truth becomes purely theoretical. This danger is particularly prevalent among those who are intellectually inclined and desire to grow in knowledge. The devil tempts us to become more interested in the doctrines about God than in knowing God Himself. This can lead to a dry, academic approach to faith, where the Bible becomes just another textbook, and our relationship with God becomes dormant.
Another danger is intellectual pride, where knowledge puffs us up, making us feel superior to others. This pride is a barrier to true spiritual growth and fellowship with God. We must remember that our knowledge is limited and that true wisdom comes from God.
The devil also tempts us to revert to relying on our works rather than faith. Having begun in the Spirit, we must not try to perfect our faith through the flesh. Our reliance should always be on Christ and His finished work, not on our own efforts.
Moreover, the devil can lead us to become obsessed with one aspect of the truth, losing the balance of the whole counsel of God. This obsession can lead to spiritual pride and division within the church. We must strive for a balanced understanding of Scripture, avoiding the pitfalls of becoming specialists in one doctrine at the expense of others.
Finally, the devil uses doubts to attack us, making us question our faith and standing with God. It's crucial to recognize that these doubts are often fiery darts from the enemy, not our own thoughts. By rejecting these doubts and standing firm in faith, we can overcome the devil's schemes.

Devotional
Day 1: Guarding the Mind with Truth
The mind is a primary battleground in spiritual warfare. If our understanding is led astray, our entire being follows. We must guard our minds with the truth of God's Word and remain vigilant against the devil's attacks. The devil's schemes are subtle and often target our thoughts, leading us away from the truth. By immersing ourselves in Scripture and prayer, we can fortify our minds against these attacks and ensure that our actions align with God's will. [02:53]
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:3-5, ESV)
Reflection: What specific steps can you take today to immerse your mind in God's truth and guard against the devil's attacks?
Day 2: Beyond Intellectualism to Knowing God
Intellectualism can lead to a dry, academic faith where our relationship with God becomes dormant. We must prioritize knowing God personally over merely knowing about Him. The danger lies in becoming more interested in the doctrines about God than in God Himself. This can result in a faith that is more theoretical than experiential, where the Bible is treated as a textbook rather than a living word. To counter this, we must seek a vibrant, personal relationship with God, allowing His presence to transform our hearts and minds. [08:55]
"Thus says the Lord: 'Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.'" (Jeremiah 9:23-24, ESV)
Reflection: How can you shift your focus from merely acquiring knowledge about God to deepening your personal relationship with Him today?
Day 3: Humility in the Pursuit of Wisdom
Intellectual pride is a barrier to true spiritual growth. We must remain humble, recognizing that our knowledge is limited and that true wisdom comes from God. Pride can make us feel superior to others, hindering our spiritual development and our relationships within the church. By acknowledging our limitations and seeking God's wisdom, we open ourselves to genuine growth and deeper fellowship with Him and others. [21:08]
"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones." (Proverbs 3:7-8, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you struggle with intellectual pride, and how can you practice humility and seek God's wisdom today?
Day 4: Reliance on Christ Alone
We must rely on Christ and His finished work, not on our own efforts. Having begun in the Spirit, we must not try to perfect our faith through the flesh. The temptation to revert to self-reliance can lead us away from the grace and sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice. By trusting in His completed work, we can experience true freedom and spiritual growth, knowing that our salvation and sanctification are secure in Him. [23:19]
"Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?" (Galatians 3:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you are tempted to rely on your own efforts rather than trusting in Christ's finished work?
Day 5: Overcoming Doubts with Faith
Doubts are often fiery darts from the enemy, not our own thoughts. By rejecting these doubts and standing firm in faith, we can overcome the devil's schemes. Doubts can cause us to question our faith and our standing with God, leading to spiritual instability. Recognizing these doubts as attacks from the enemy allows us to confront them with the truth of God's promises and the assurance of His love. [40:13]
"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation." (Hebrews 11:1-2, ESV)
Reflection: What specific doubts have been troubling you, and how can you confront them with the truth of God's Word and stand firm in faith today?
Quotes
We are engaged at the moment in considering the meaning of this phrase the Wilds of the devil the Apostle exorts us to so be clothed with the power of God that we may be able to withstand these Wilds of the devil and we've seen already that these Wilds are manifested in many different ways. [00:51:03]
The mind first of all and then more in the realm of experience and then thirdly uh we hope to consider it in the realm of practice and conduct and behavior but at the moment we are looking at it as regards the attacks which The Devil Makes upon our minds and this of course is in many ways the most prominent theme which is to be found in the new test Epistles. [00:55:51]
The moment you think that you can decide and determine what is true and what isn't you've already succumbed to the Ws of the devil very well we've considered that and we just glanced also at the terrible danger that arose very early in the church along the line of some esoteric knowledge. [00:04:30]
The danger of becoming theoretical in our whole attitude towards this precious knowledge now I must repeat again what I said last Sunday that these particular Temptations are of course those to which the more intellectual able type of person is subject it can happen to all but it is the particular danger of those who have got minds and who desire understand. [00:06:22]
The danger and of course the Devil comes with all his wilds and if he can persuade us to come to this condition he is more than satisfied in other words it is the failure to realize that the ultimate end ultimate end of all know know is to bring us to a knowledge of the person we are not to stop at the knowledge itself. [00:07:45]
It's a terrible thing this and a terrible danger that we should become more more concerned about and interested in our intellectual knowledge of Christian truth than in our knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ himself that's the danger. [00:07:22]
The moment you begin to find yourself regarding this truth as just a subject for study you've already succumbed to the devil this is of course the peculiar danger of certain types of persons the danger I say of regarding the Bible is just a textbook. [00:12:08]
I would almost be prepared to say that it is sinful to have examinations on biblical knowledge because you encouraging this purely theoretical approach do I know the Books of the Bible do I know how to analyze them and classify them that's not the way to approach this book this is God's word which is meant to feed the whole soul. [00:13:28]
Intellectual Pride it's not the same thing as the last thing but the last one tends to lead to it doesn't always lead to it but it tends to it's what the Bible calls being puffed up knowledge says Paul in 1 Corinthians 8 knowledge puffeth up and it does of course all sorts of knowledge puff up but this one in particular. [00:19:15]
The danger of having started in the spirit to go back to the flesh now there is of course the great theme of the epistle to the Galatians in many ways Galatians 3:3 are ye so foolish having begun in the spirit are you now made perfect by the flesh now it's it's a very big subject this. [00:22:36]
The danger of being obsessed by one aspect of the truth I use the term obsessed quite deliberately because uh while it falls short of a psychopathic Obsession in the strict medical sense there is no doubt about the reality of the obsession which the devil undoubtedly does give to certain people what I mean is this that he fixes your attention upon one aspect of the truth only. [00:25:14]
The devil can be very subtle at this point he will plague them in with doubts but he succeeds of course in this way by suggesting to them that the doubts are their doubts and that doubts are always and invariably sinful now that's a very subtle thing isn't it what the devil does is to conceal himself and to make you think that the doubts are arising in yourself.
