Guarding the Good Things: Heritage, Gospel, Calling

Paul tells Timothy to keep “that good thing” which has been committed to him by the Holy Ghost who dwells in believers. That little phrase opens up a whole list of good things God has put into a Christian’s life, things that ought never be taken lightly, trashed, parked in the backyard, or allowed to slip away.

Timothy’s heritage was a good thing. Paul remembers the unfeigned faith that first lived in Lois and Eunice and then in Timothy, along with the truth and guidance Paul himself had poured into this younger man. A godly home, Bible preaching, faithful parents, Sunday school teachers, and people who spoke truth are not things to mock after growing up. A difficult or broken heritage, however, does not have to stay broken. God can start a new line with one person who determines that those coming behind will be able to say, “My heritage is a good thing.”

The gospel is a good thing for every person, regardless of background. Paul says God saved and called believers, not according to their works, but according to His own purpose and grace in Christ Jesus before the world began. The gospel is not earned by doing better, treating neighbors well, or piling up good deeds. Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection provide the gift that sinners must receive by faith. God knew the debt sin would create, and God put the Savior in place before the foundation of the world.

God’s calling is also a good thing. Paul was appointed a preacher, apostle, and teacher, but every saved person has been saved for a purpose between salvation and heaven. Salvation certainly gives cause for rejoicing, but it cannot become a lifelong pep rally. A Christian husband, wife, parent, teacher, witness, church member, or worker has been set in place by God to serve Him right where God has put them. “You were not saved to celebrate. You were saved to serve.”

Paul’s confidence is a good thing because he knows whom he has believed. The world may live in gray areas, uncertainty, and noise, but Christ gives settled assurance. God holds His children, Christ’s cross is enough, grace is amazing, and heaven is secure for those who have believed.

Paul finally gives the command to guard these good things. The word “keep” carries the idea of a soldier standing watch so that something is not snatched away or ruined. The Holy Ghost supplies the power to protect a godly heritage, preserve the pure gospel, fulfill a calling, and remain confident in Christ.
