1. "A red flag, I'll say it this way, is a behavior trait or characteristic about a person that signals potential problems or concern. Right? In a relationship or in that individual. In other words, a red flag is a character flaw. Now, I think all of us, in some way, shape, or form, have character flaws, except for my wife. And, of course, she's perfect. That's what she told me to say. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Some red flags are pretty subtle and difficult to notice by others or even ourselves. I think sometimes we can have blind spots. And really not even know what our own character flaws are. While other times, character flaws can be huge and glaring. And sometimes the only one who can't see them is us."

2. "The Spirit and blessing of God can take you to a place where your character cannot keep you. The story of Saul is this. The blessing of God, the anointing of God took him to a place where his character couldn't keep him."

3. "Every single one of us in the room are capable of following just like Saul did. Think about it. No one wakes up in the morning, no loving husband wakes up in the morning and says, today is the day that I want to cheat on my wife, lose my marriage, my kids, and everything I know and love. It doesn't work that way. It's gradual. It starts with little character compromises. Oh, this little thing is not that big of a deal. It's little red flags that aren't addressed and aren't dealt with."

5. "Faith can't fix what you won't face. If you have a character problem, create some healthy habits. Bad habits, bad outcomes. Good habits, good outcomes."

1. "So Samuel tells him, Samuel is Saul's spiritual overseer. And he gives him the direction from the Lord. And his direction was very simple. Hey, you're going to go battle this people, the Amalekites, and here's what I want you to do. I want you to completely wipe them out as the Lord has commanded you. It looks like this in 1 Samuel 15, 2 and 3. Thus says the Lord, I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came out of Egypt. Now, go and strike Amalek. And devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them."

2. "Saul's pride made him unfaithful. He was unfaithful to be a leader because he was unleadable. And this action results in where we started in verse 10. It says, I regret that I have made Saul king. Now, the word regret here, to me it carries some pained emotions. The word regret, the implication here is that the Lord was pained. He was full of sorrow. And it's the same word used to describe God's view of creation in the flood account in Genesis chapter 6, verse 6, where it says, the Lord regretted that he had made man on earth. It grieved him in his heart. So I want you to see this. Saul's moral failings grieved the heart of God. Here's what I want you guys to know this morning. That our sin still to this day grieves the heart of the Father."

3. "Saul refused to own his mistakes. And I know it can be kind of jarring to look at God's swift seeming rejection of Saul. Because we're so accustomed to God's grace, which God is grace. But yet repentance is also required upon receiving grace. Saul refused to repent. And as you'll see in the next few chapters, 1 Samuel, there's a massive difference from Saul's successor, King David. Both of them, as you're gonna learn, Saul and David, both of them sinned in very dramatic ways. And in some ways I would say David did some pretty gnarly things. But the difference in the outcome, the key word was repentance. Saul refused to repent and own his mistakes. David did. And there was a different outcome."

4. "So repentance upon grace is necessary. And when we receive the grace of Jesus Christ, this free gift of salvation, the natural response should be to admit that I'm a sinner and repent, turn from sin, turn to Jesus, admit, this is a better way of doing life. There's no answer within myself. It only leads to destruction. But when I submit myself to the authority of the Lord, it leads to life. This is the nature of the gospel. The blessing of the Lord took Saul where his character couldn't keep him. So we need to guard our character. We need today, I was praying today that the Lord would speak to you and that we would do the hard work of heart work. And ask the question, where is your character taking you?"

5. "I want you, I want you when you're old and gray to have children that wanna be around you and love you and admire you and think that you're their hero. I want that for you. I want that for me. So where's your character taking you? Those of you who have been placed in a situation and a season by God where you're like, how did I get here? I feel that way every single day. How did I get here? I don't deserve to be where I am. I wanna keep cultivating that humility and keep in repentance so that I never think I can do it better. And I keep trusting and following after Jesus."
