Proverbs 4:23 puts the heart at the center: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” The heart is not just feelings. In the Hebrew picture, it is the command center. It is where thoughts, emotions, will, moral decisions, and desires come from. The heart is where everything starts.
The Old Testament holds a real tension around the heart. Genesis shows hearts bent toward evil, while God tells Samuel that he looks at the heart rather than outward appearance. Life forms that heart from the beginning. Families, neighborhoods, friends, churches, jobs, culture, scrolling, clicking, wounds, sin, and baggage all leave their mark. Some formation is good, and some of it leaves scars that can change how a person responds and where a person is headed.
Ezekiel 36 brings hope into that mixed bag. God promises to remove the heart of stone, give a heart of flesh, and put his Spirit within his people. Jesus fulfills that promise through his death, resurrection, and gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus calls his people to abide, to remain, to make their home in him as he makes his home in them. The Holy Spirit does not merely give more information. The Spirit heals wounds, corrects sin, brings peace, forms desire, and produces good fruit.
Matthew 6 makes guarding the heart very practical. Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Treasure tells on a person. Time, money, attention, energy, thoughts, and priorities reveal where the heart is actually living. Treasure also trains a person. Every small repeated act, every upgrade, every impulse buy, every subscription, every “just this one time” quietly forms attention and affection.
Jesus warns that treasure eventually leads the heart because no one can serve two masters. The issue is not that money itself is bad. The issue is allegiance. Comfort, lifestyle, success, fun things, and even good responsibilities can slowly take Jesus’ place on the throne of the heart. Rule keeping cannot fix that problem, because a person can do all the right things while withholding the heart from Christ.
Guarding the heart begins by guarding treasure. A daily audit helps bring that reality into the light: sit with Jesus, thank him, ask where he showed up, ask where treasure went, and remain with him. The Father is not waiting to condemn bad fruit. The Father is waiting for his children to run to him, repent, receive forgiveness, and let the Spirit keep transforming the heart.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Treasure tells on the heart
Jesus treats treasure as evidence, not merely as a budgeting issue. The places receiving a person’s money, time, attention, and emotional energy reveal what is carrying real weight in the heart. Honest awareness can feel exposing, but it also opens the door to deeper allegiance to Christ. [45:42]
- 2. Small choices quietly train desire
Treasure is formed through daily repetition, not only through dramatic decisions. A thousand unnoticed choices can slowly train the heart toward comfort, consumption, status, fear, or trust. The direction of a life is often established long before the final visible decision arrives. [48:14]
- 3. The Spirit gives a new heart
Ezekiel’s promise refuses the idea that people can simply repair themselves through more effort. God removes the heart of stone and puts his Spirit within his people, making obedience possible from the inside out. Transformation comes as Christ’s presence reaches the wounds, sin, motives, and desires that shape a person. [37:19]
- 4. Abiding comes before good fruit
Jesus calls his people to remain in him rather than anxiously manufacture fruit. The Holy Spirit works in the heart of the person who learns to sit, become aware, and make room for Christ’s presence. Good works then flow from a heart being inhabited and formed by God. [39:32]
- 5. Daily audits guard the heart
A simple end-of-day prayer can expose what has captured the heart without turning spirituality into rule keeping. Asking where Jesus showed up and where treasure went creates space for honesty before the Father. Gratitude and repentance become ways of returning to the One who already welcomes his children.
