No Filters: Guarding Intimacy and Waiting on God

The Song of Solomon opens as “the song of songs,” the greatest song that was ever written, the same kind of language as King of kings and Lord of lords. The text does not treat love, passion, or human connection like dirty things. God created passion and intimacy, and God owns the right to show how those gifts are supposed to work.

The woman in Song of Solomon begins with insecurity. She says she is dark, sun beaten, and not like the daughters of Jerusalem. Her own vineyard has not been kept because she has been busy keeping everybody else’s vineyard. The text shows a soul that feels unpolished, overlooked, and not beautiful enough, just like people who learn to live by likes, shares, approval, status, and cheap wine.

Genesis shows where the first filter came from. God created male and female in His image, and they did not need anything added to make them acceptable. Sin opened their eyes to shame, and Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together to cover what God had made. The fig leaf became mankind’s first filter, a cheap fix that could not cover shame, could not heal sin, and could not restore the image of God.

God did not leave man hiding behind leaves. God made coats of skin, and a life had to be given to cover their shame. That picture points forward to Christ, because Jesus does not wait for sinners to sew together a better version of themselves. Jesus covers the unpolished, imperfect soul in His righteousness.

The woman’s temptation is real. She sees loose women getting attention, but she makes up her mind not to become like them. The repeated warning, “stir not up nor awake my love till he please,” becomes a guardrail for the heart. Passion is like fire in a fireplace. Inside God’s order, the fire warms and blesses. Outside God’s order, the fire spreads, damages, and burns things down.

The beloved answers her insecurity with covenant love. He does not tell her to fix her sunburn or clean herself up first. He says she is fair, beautiful, pleasant, and has dove eyes. The beloved flips the script, because real love does not demand performance before acceptance.

God’s timing is not punishment. Waiting protects the heart, and covenant love takes time. Married couples are called to guard the holy fire of intimacy and keep the covenant above work, kids, family, and every other pressure. Those carrying regret are not left condemned, because Jesus still gives mercy, grace, forgiveness, and a second chance.
