49s
“Perhaps that's the deepest invitation of this passage. Jesus is not simply saying, keep the bad things out. He's saying, make room for God to come in. Because what we welcome into our hearts will eventually shape our lives. When we make room for grace, there's less room for fear. When we make room for gratitude, there's less room for envy. When we make room for hope, there's less room for despair. When we make room for love, there's less room for hatred. We become what we practice. We become what we repeatedly welcome in.”
43s
“Don't let the voices of the world become louder than the voice of God. There will always be things competing for the opportunity to shape our hearts. The question this morning is, what are we allowing to take root in us? Because just as fear can grow, so can faith. Just as bitterness can grow, so can grace. Just as cynicism can grow, so can hope. Let God have the louder voice. Let God's love shape you. Let God's grace tell the story.”
46s
“There is a difference. Suspicion says everyone is a threat. Trust no one. Discernment says let me pay attention to who and what is producing good fruit. Suspicion closes the heart, and discernment opens the doors to the heart carefully. Suspicion asks, who or what am I wary of? And the sermon asks, what is this producing? Is it producing the fruits of the spirit that we've been talking about all summer? Is it making us more like Christ? Does it deepen our love of God and neighbor?”
