August 23, 2026: 10:30 am Service: Growing in Faith: "Dangerous Yeast

Matthew 16 begins with the Pharisees and Sadducees asking Jesus for a sign: “Show us something. Prove yourself.” Jesus refuses because their problem is not a lack of evidence. Their hearts have already been shaped by certainty, suspicion, and a fixed idea of what God is supposed to look like. The sign is standing right in front of them, but they cannot recognize it.

Jesus then warns the disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Yeast is small, but once it gets into the dough, it spreads through everything. Fear, resentment, suspicion, self-righteousness, and outrage can work the same way in a life. What enters the heart little by little can change the whole shape of a person.

Advertising, social media, and the endless noise of the world all seek to shape desire, fear, and attention. Anger practiced again and again becomes easier to reach for. Gratitude practiced again and again makes gratitude easier to see. “Garbage in, garbage out” can be true spiritually too. If anger, suspicion, outrage, and fear become the steady diet, peace, trust, and hope will be harder to imagine.

The gospel, however, is not a defensive project. Jesus does not merely tell his disciples what to keep out. Jesus tells them what to let in: grace, truth, compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, generosity, humility, beauty, the stories of God’s faithfulness, the cries of suffering people, and the Holy Spirit. A garden cannot flourish merely because weeds are pulled. A garden needs seed, water, sunlight, and care. Prayer, worship, Scripture, Sabbath, generosity, forgiveness, and community are not religious chores. These are ways that God tends a life and grows something good within it.

Christian community resembles an orchestra that moves from beautiful chaos into music as each person listens to the conductor and to one another. Christ calls different generations, questions, experiences, and opinions into a shared attentiveness to his voice. The warning about yeast therefore calls for discernment, not suspicion. Suspicion says that everyone is a threat. Discernment asks what something is producing: good fruit or fear, love or judgment, justice and mercy or bitterness.

Jesus brings the disciples back to bread because they see scarcity while he reveals abundance. God is already here. God is enough. Grace makes less room for fear, gratitude makes less room for envy, hope makes less room for despair, and love makes less room for hatred. Small things, given time, can transform a person, a family, a church, and a whole community.
