Eternal life is a gift given by God through grace, not something we can earn or fully comprehend with our minds. Yet, we are called to grip it—to take hold of it with urgency and intentionality, even though it remains unseen. This call is not about striving for salvation, but about living with a deep awareness of the reality of eternity and the truth that our existence continues beyond this world. Jesus, in his prayer for his followers, makes it clear that those who receive his word and find joy in it are not of this world. Their identity and hope are anchored in what is to come, not in the fleeting pleasures or trials of this life.
Eternity is real, and both heaven and hell are real destinations. Jesus himself spoke of these realities, not as abstract concepts, but as places with profound significance. The story of the rich man and Lazarus illustrates the irreversible divide between those who are comforted in God’s presence and those who are separated from him. This truth should awaken us to the urgency of gripping eternal life, not just for ourselves, but for those around us who have yet to hear or respond to the gospel.
Receiving God’s word brings joy to those who are not of this world, but it also brings opposition. The world resists the message of Christ because it calls for transformation and repentance. As followers of Jesus, we are not promised an easy path; rather, we are promised God’s protection—not from suffering, but from the evil one who seeks to destroy our faith. Our perseverance through trials is both a testimony to the world and a means by which our faith is refined and proven genuine.
Sanctification comes only through the truth of God’s word. No amount of self-improvement, religious ritual, or philosophical pursuit can bring us closer to God. Jesus’ words are the unchanging anchor for our souls, providing the only sure foundation in a world of shifting truths and competing ideologies. We are not called to withdraw from the world, but to be sent into it, carrying the light of Christ and the hope of eternal life.
Just as a storm-chasing vehicle must be anchored to withstand the fiercest tornado, so must our lives be anchored in the truth of Christ. When we loosen our grip, chaos and confusion follow. But when we hold fast to Jesus and his word, we are secure, no matter the storms we face. This is the call: to grip eternal life, to be born again, and to live each day anchored in the hope and truth that only Christ provides.
John 17:13-19 (ESV) — > But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
