Just as athletes leave everything on the field, believers are called to abandon self-centeredness and pour their entire existence into knowing and glorifying God. This kind of love isn’t natural—it flows from recognizing God’s worthiness as the flawless Creator who first loved us at the cross. True love for God ignites when we grasp His holiness and respond to His grace. [17:52]

Sermon Summary

Matthew 22 places Jesus in front of a lawyer who is not really trying to learn. The Pharisee’s question comes as a test, because the religious leaders had six hundred thirteen commands and wanted Jesus to pick one. Jesus answers with Deuteronomy 6, the Shema, the words faithful Jews knew by heart: love the Lord God with all the heart, soul, and mind. The greatest commandment is not a suggestion, not a tradition, not an option for extra serious Christians. The greatest commandment is the purpose of life.

God demands love that goes above every earthly relationship. The love given to a spouse, children, family, or even the person in the mirror must not sit above love for God. God alone is worthy of that “leave it all on the field” kind of love, because no sport, career, hobby, status, or person deserves total abandonment like he does. God is not loved despite flaws, the way sinners love one another. God is loved because his character is perfect, flawless, holy, beautiful, and sinless.

God also demonstrates this love in the cross. Romans 5 says that while sinners were still sinners, Christ died for them. The cross answers the aching question of whether God really loves sinners who have run away, rejected him, and done evil. God does not merely talk about love. God proves it in his Son.

The Spirit then deploys that love into the hearts of God’s people. Love for God cannot be manufactured, white knuckled, or produced by enough church attendance, conferences, or books. God gives what God commands. The fruit of the Spirit is love, and “Christ in you” becomes the only hope for loving God the way Jesus loves God.

Love for God shows itself in affection, dwelling, worship, and obedience. The heart feels real affection for God, the soul wants to spend time with him, worship rises as overflow, and obedience becomes the desire of a changed person. Jesus alone fulfilled this perfectly, so Jesus is not only the example to follow but the Redeemer to trust.

The second commandment flows right out of the first: love the neighbor as the self. Love for God cannot stay religious, theoretical, or merely verbal. Leviticus, the Good Samaritan, and Jesus’ command to love enemies all press love into practical action. The church must not become a room full of experts whose hearts are far from God. The church is called to be the place where people know they can come to feel loved, because Jesus, the perfect neighbor, first came and neighbored among needy, hostile sinners.
