Sermon Summary

The risen Christ stands behind every gathering of the church, because the Word is living since its Author is alive. John 3 brings Nicodemus, a religious ruler, to Jesus under the cover of night, and Jesus tells him that religion, reputation, and birthright are not enough. Jesus says a person must be born again, changed from the inside out, if that person is going to see the kingdom of God.

John 3 names the greatest gift as eternal life, but Jesus does not define eternal life as simple fire insurance or merely avoiding hell and going to heaven. Jesus defines eternal life as knowing the one true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent, a relationship with God that will never end. God gives this gift in love. John 3:16 shows that God loved the world, not because people were so lovable, but because God is love. The cross exists because God loves the people he created enough to give his most prized possession, his only Son. Like a brother giving a kidney so another brother might live, God sacrifices what is his so dying sinners might receive life.

The gift is also rejected by men. John says the light came into the world, but people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. Sin is not neutral, and hiding in the dark reveals a heart that loves something more than Jesus. God still calls sons and daughters to stop hiding, stop running, stop rejecting, and start receiving.

Christ purchases the gift. The Son of Man descended from heaven, and like the bronze serpent Moses lifted in the wilderness, Jesus had to be lifted up on the cross. Sin is a terminal sickness, but God has provided the antidote. Salvation costs more than anything this world can price out, because it cost Jesus his blood, and the bill has been paid in full.

Faith receives the gift, and the gift transforms. Whoever believes in Christ is not condemned. Whoever comes to the light begins a new life where status before God changes instantly, from guilty to not guilty, and where love for darkness gives way to love for Jesus.
