Hippo Valley Christian Mission stands as a picture of what happens when ordinary people keep a promise to God. John Pemberton and Denny Pruitt came home from World War II convinced that their lives belonged to Christ, and God opened the door for them to carry the gospel into Zimbabwe. The mission began with a simple conviction: reach the whole person for Christ, body, mind, and soul. Health care served the body, mission schools served the mind, and preacher training and church planting served the soul.
That same vision has grown from a clinic and a school into thirty mission schools, thousands of children, high schools, Bible colleges, and a movement training hundreds who will reach thousands. The Living Proof program puts a Bible, a uniform, education, encouragement, and a real path forward into the hands of children who otherwise would have little opportunity. The mission is no longer merely a field receiving help. God is raising Zimbabwe to become a mission movement that sends workers across Africa.
The Great Commission gives the church its agenda. Jesus sends His people from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Garner is Jerusalem. The wider region is Judea. Samaria includes people close by who look different, think different, or live on the other side of the tracks. The ends of the earth include Africa, Asia, India, and every place where people need Christ.
Jesus’ lordship does not leave room for a church that believes in Him but does not believe in missions. A church that is not mission minded will become a mission field. A church that makes God’s agenda its agenda finds that God entrusts it with more people, more generosity, and more resources. Great commitment to the Great Commission makes a great church.
People matter because every person bears God’s image and comes from the same human family. Hell matters because Jesus believed it was real, and He came into a world already condemned to save it. The gospel matters because sin remains mankind’s deepest problem, but Christ brings good news: a Father who loves, forgiveness for sins, a family to belong to, and a future in heaven.
God’s blessing follows generosity aimed at His heart. The church does not need to fear that mission giving takes away from God’s work at home, because it is all God’s money. God blesses churches that refuse to keep the good news to themselves.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s agenda must become the church’s The Great Commission is not a side project for a few interested people. Jesus names the whole map: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. A church becomes healthy when God’s concern for the world becomes its own driving concern. [46:13]
- 2. People matter because God made them God does not rank people by race, geography, wealth, or usefulness. Every person carries His image and stands within His desire that none should perish. Mission work begins when distant people stop being statistics and become neighbors who matter to God. [58:37]
- 3. Hell makes the gospel urgently necessary Jesus came because humanity was already condemned in sin, not because He wanted to add condemnation. The reality of judgment gives weight to the command to go, while the cross gives substance to the hope being offered. A church that truly believes eternity is real cannot remain casual about empty seats. [62:20]
- 4. The gospel is genuinely good news The four F’s give the gospel its full shape: a Father who loves, forgiveness of sins, a family to join, and a future in heaven. Christ does not merely improve a person’s circumstances. Christ rescues sinners from death and gives them a new identity as joint heirs with Him. [66:47]
- 5. Mission generosity rests on God’s ownership Fear often says that giving outward will weaken the church at home. Faith answers, “It’s all God’s money.” God’s resources are not exhausted when His people invest in His purposes, and churches that give freely discover that His provision is bigger than their calculations.
