Small Group Discussion Guide: Gratitude vs. Grumbling
Bible Reading (ESV)
- Exodus 16:2-3
“And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, ‘Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.’”
- Numbers 11:1
“And the people complained in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes, and when the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp.”
- James 1:13-15
“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
Observation Questions
- In Exodus 16:2-3, what are Israel’s exact words to Moses and Aaron, and how do they talk about Egypt? What picture of the past are they choosing to remember?
- In Numbers 11:1, where did the fire of the LORD burn, and what detail about the “outlying parts of the camp” stands out?
- According to James 1:14-15, what is the step-by-step path from desire to death?
- The pastor said the people’s complaints weren’t really against Moses and Aaron but against the Lord. Where did he show that from the text? (

Interpretation Questions
- What does it mean to say “grumbling rejects grace”? How does complaint accuse God of not caring or not providing, even when he has provided “manna for today”? (
[46:54])
- If “we become what we behold,” how could fixing one’s attention on offenses or envy slowly shape a heart away from God? What might that look like in a week of normal life? (
[37:03])
- James says temptation comes from our own desires, not from God. How does that truth correct the way some people talk about “God testing me” when they are really entertaining certain thoughts? (
[40:25])
- Numbers 11:1 shows fire at the edges of the camp. What might this picture say about how grumbling starts at the margins of our hearts or communities and works inward? (
[44:07])
Application Questions
- Complaints land on Someone. Where have you been murmuring about a leader, a family member, or your situation, and how could you turn that moment into specific thanksgiving this week? Try writing one sentence of thanks every time you catch the complaint. (
[35:46])
- Name one “why” you’ve been stuck in lately (“Why me? Why now? Why not them?”). What will you thank God for instead—today, this week, this month—to move forward? Be concrete: 3 things you will thank God for each morning. (
[49:21])
- Attention audit: What are you beholding most—news, social media, an offense at work, someone else’s blessings? What is one thing you will remove for seven days and one grace-filled practice you will add (Scripture, worship, a gratitude journal)? (
[37:03])
- Bring desire into the light: Identify one inner desire that keeps luring you (comparison, comfort, control, lust, resentment). Who will you tell this week, and what simple practice will you use to “starve” it (fasting, accountability, phone filter, serving someone)? (
[40:25])
- Praise with shackles on: What current constraint (pain in your body, tight budget, strained relationship) will you choose to worship through this week? Pick a song, a Psalm, and a time each day to praise—before anything changes. (
[55:32])
- Daily manna plan: Where have you been saying, “What I have isn’t enough”? What is one daily provision God has given (job, a meal, a friend, breath, Scripture) that you will name out loud and thank him for at dinner each night? (
[35:22])
- Guard the edge of the camp: What “edge” habit in your life (late-night scrolling, gossip at lunch, small sarcasms) feeds grumbling? What boundary will you set this week to keep fire from spreading—specific time limits, conversation shifts, or a no-gossip cue word with a friend? (
[44:07])
