Grafted Life: Fruit of the Spirit in Us

Devotional

Day 1: The Grafted Life – Roots Below, Fruit Above

A fruit tree’s graft line marks where wild roots meet cultivated branches. For believers, the Spirit’s work begins beneath the surface, transforming what once produced bitterness into life that overflows with love. Growth isn’t about reaching upward to grasp holiness, but tending to the supernatural union Christ has already planted within. True fruit emerges not from self-improvement but from abiding in the Vine. [34:17]

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, NIV)

Reflection: Where have you been straining to “reach up” toward godliness through effort? How might you shift your focus to the Spirit’s work already rooted in you?

Day 2: Sucker Branches – When Good Things Starve Better Things

Bright green shoots sprouting below the graft line seem healthy but drain life from true fruit. Similarly, even noble acts—serving, studying Scripture, leading ministries—can stem from self-driven motives rather than the Spirit. These “suckers” thrive on approval, control, or envy, masquerading as righteousness while starving our capacity to love. [35:05]

“The flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:17-18, NIV)

Reflection: What “good thing” in your life might secretly feed on old roots of pride or fear? How could surrendering it to Christ redirect nourishment to true fruit?

Day 3: Freedom’s Weight – Choosing Mission Over Menu

Filling out a mission preference form exposes freedom’s tension: Christ’s gift of choice collides with our craving for comfort. Like Paul’s warning to the Galatians, liberty isn’t about selecting the most appealing option but stewarding decisions through love’s lens. True freedom weighs destinations not by weather or novelty, but by where our “yes” most clearly echoes Christ’s. [22:21]

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Galatians 5:13-14, NIV)

Reflection: When has your use of freedom prioritized self over service? How might love reshape a current decision you’re wrestling with?

Day 4: Fruit From the Vine – Love’s Many Flavors

A single grafted tree bears one kind of fruit, yet each apple carries the vine’s full essence. So the Spirit’s fruit—joy, peace, patience—are not separate virtues to collect but diverse expressions of love’s singular root. These grow not by imitation but incarnation, as Christ’s life in us ripens into flavors that nourish others. [45:20]

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV)

Reflection: Which “flavor” of the Spirit’s fruit feels most alive in you this season? Which one might Christ want to cultivate next through your abiding in Him?

Day 5: Cutting the Suckers – Pruning as Protection

Gardeners prune sucker branches not to punish the tree but to protect its true fruit. Similarly, walking by the Spirit requires examining motives: Why do I serve? Why do I stay silent? Why do I say yes? Each cut feels costly, yet every surrendered sucker makes space for richer growth. Trust the Vinedresser—He knows what to remove so life can flourish. [50:00]

“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” (John 15:2, NIV)

Reflection: What habit, relationship, or commitment might God be inviting you to prune—not because it’s bad, but because it’s blocking better fruit? How can you surrender this to Him today?

Sermon Summary

Paul brings the Galatians back to the freedom Christ has given them, but he refuses to let freedom mean simply doing whatever feels right. The whole law, Paul says, is fulfilled in this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Love fulfils the law, but the law does not keep God’s people. Christ has given freedom, real choice, and that freedom brings the hard question of how believers will walk each day.

The contrast in Galatians 5 is between the flesh and the Spirit. The flesh is not merely bad behaviour sitting outside a Christian and pulling them away from God. The Spirit has been planted within God’s people, working from the inside out, and the conflict is now a war within. Jesus is not an example to reach for, something external that must be achieved. Jesus is undeserved grace, fully enough, and his Spirit is already at work in sinners who belong to him.

The image of a grafted fruit tree helps expose the problem. A sucker branch can look bright, healthy, and productive, yet it grows from the old wild root below the graft line. A sucker takes nutrients from the tree and eventually produces bitter fruit. The flesh works like that. The flesh can over desire even good things, including God’s good law, church service, ministry, family, success, and a good reputation. The question is not only what a person does, but why that person does it.

Paul’s list of the acts of the flesh includes obvious sins, but it also exposes hidden relational sins: hatred, discord, jealousy, rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy. Those sins can sit underneath actions that look impressive to everybody else. The flesh can love church activity, leadership, care for others, and moral behaviour when those things feed control, pride, envy, or self made righteousness.

The Spirit, by contrast, grows one fruit: love expressed in joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. God promised this fruit long before Galatians, and Christ makes it possible because he is the true vine. Fruit does not give life to the tree. Fruit shows that life is already there.

Paul therefore calls God’s people to keep in step with the Spirit. Prayer, Bible reading, and real devotion to God are not boxes to tick. They are the place where believers remember the true vine, test the source of their desires, and cut off the sucker branches. Christ does not fail when his people fail. Christ in them has been planted firmly, and he will grow them toward eternal life.

Key Takeaways

1. Love fulfils the law’s true purpose Paul does not send Christians back under the law as a way of securing righteousness. Love is the fulfilment of the law because love reflects the life Christ has given, rather than an attempt to control appearances before God. Christian freedom is not freedom from obedience, but freedom to serve others without using them for self justification. [24:56]
2. Good actions can grow from bad roots The flesh does not only chase obviously wicked things. The flesh can over desire good things such as ministry, morality, family, success, and even Bible knowledge. A life can look fruitful while secretly drawing strength from envy, control, fear, or selfish ambition. [36:04]
3. The Spirit bears one fruit: love Paul speaks of the fruit of the Spirit, not a collection of traits that can be picked and chosen. Love is expressed through joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. These qualities are not achievements believers manufacture, but God’s own life growing through them. [44:47]
4. Fruit reveals life already received An apple does not give life to a tree; it shows that the tree is alive. In the same way, the fruit of the Spirit does not save anyone, but it reveals the inward life of Christ. Faith alone saves, yet living faith cannot remain permanently fruitless. [48:28]
5. Keep asking where desires come from The graft line calls for honest self examination in every decision, whether big or small. Service, work, relationships, ministry, and personal plans need to be tested for their source. Prayerful devotion keeps believers close to the true vine and exposes the sucker branches of the old self. [49:37]

#WalkInStepWithGod

“Brothers and sisters, we can't create fruit. The best we can do is be a sucker. But by God's grace, even an undeserving sinner can reach a richer and higher calling in this life. And though we will never be perfected until we reach heaven, know that day by day, you will produce fruit. Thanks to the spirit in you. And as simple as it sounds, prayer, bible reading, regular devotion to God, moments when it's just you and God, That's how we walk in step with God.”

#GraftedInChrist

“Remembering that life is grafted onto us, the life of Jesus Christ. And his death was the death of our flesh too. And if we follow that flesh, we follow it to death. But if we follow the life of the vine, the fruit bearing spirit, we follow it to eternal life. It's only because of Christ in us that we live. But know this, be confident in this. Christ in you has been planted so firmly. He's not going anywhere. He will grow you. He will change you day by day and in abundance.”

#HeartTransformed

“You might do things that look similar to life before knowing Jesus. You might look completely different to the way you were before knowing Jesus. But what will happen is that your heart will change. It will grow each day. Even the motivations behind what you do, they will shift completely. And it's not the fruit itself that saves you. Of course, right, an apple on a tree. That doesn't give life to the tree. It's a sign of life already.”
