Bible ReadingActs 15:4-6 “And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them. But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.”
[10:01]Hebrews 12:12-14 “Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”
[11:40]Matthew 25:34-40 “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
[13:36]Ephesians 4:13-15 “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”
[15:46]Genesis 19:12-26 “And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”
[55:40]Observation questions- In Acts 15, who came together to consider the matter, and what does that show about how weighty church matters were handled? [10:07]
- In Hebrews 12, what five actions are named in the passage before and around the command to pursue holiness?
- In Matthew 25, what are some of the specific acts of mercy Jesus mentions toward “the least of these”? [13:26]
- In Genesis 19, what details show that Lot was warned, delayed, and then was still shown mercy before judgment fell? [52:44]
Interpretation questions- Acts 15 presents apostles and elders coming together to consider a hard matter. Why might shared eldership protect a congregation better than one man acting alone? [10:17]
- Hebrews 12 connects strengthened knees, straight paths, peace, and holiness. Why does holiness require courage, especially in a culture that resists plain truth? [12:16]
- Matthew 25 shows that service to needy people is received by Christ as service to Him. How does that shape the way a church should think about food, clothing, bills, housing help, and practical care? [14:12]
- Genesis 19 shows that Lot’s body left Sodom, but his household was still deeply affected by attachment to it. What does Lot’s lingering and his wife’s looking back reveal about the danger of a divided heart? [56:01]
Application questions- Church cannot just be a Sunday habit or a churchy moment. When this group gathers, what does each person believe God wants to heal, correct, or strengthen in his or her life right now? [08:51]
- Holiness still matters, and truth still has to be spoken. Where does a person most feel pressure to stay quiet about what is right—at home, at work, online, or with family—and what would strengthened knees look like there? [11:47]
- Jesus receives love shown to needy people as love shown to Him. What is one practical need each person has noticed lately—someone hungry, behind on bills, lonely, shut in, or struggling—and what might faithful action look like this week? [13:46]
- Unity of the faith means Christ is the head, and no one little group has all the pieces. Is there any pride, suspicion, or hurt that makes it hard to receive from other believers? What would speaking the truth in love look like in that area? [17:05]
- Grace gives time, but not unlimited time. What has someone in the group been putting off that needs to be faced now—repentance, obedience, an apology, a hard conversation, or cutting off a sinful pattern? [49:43]
- Old attachments can keep pulling a heart backward even after outward change has started. What is one “look back” temptation that needs to be named honestly—an app, a relationship, a place, a habit, or an old hurt? [59:04]
- It is never too late until it is too late. Who needs a conversation, forgiveness, or a clear expression of love before more time slips away? [01:01:52]
