Framed by Grace: Surprised by God’s Generosity

God keeps surprising people with gifts that go beyond belief. God’s surprises are not like an unexpected bill or another assignment, but like a father showing up across the country to surprise his daughter at a college concert. God’s surprise has brought First Lutheran and its new pastor together at a time when neither expected Decatur, Illinois, to become home.

Jesus’ vineyard story shows what this surprise looks like in God’s kingdom. The workers who came early made a clear contract and expected a clear transaction. The workers who came in the last hour simply heard the invitation, got up, and went. The landowner gave every crew a full day’s wage, and that generosity unsettled the workers who had labored all day.

The first-hour crew lives by calculation, expectation, and comparison. The last-hour crew lives by gratefulness because grace has surprised them. The first crew works for a wage, while the last crew works for the landowner. The difference is not that the early workers are bad people, because their reaction is a reaction that comes easily to anybody called first.

Grace does not add up according to the fairness systems of the world. Grace gives what cannot be earned, measured, or demanded. Jesus tells this heavenly story with earthly meaning because disciples need their expectations messed with and their grumbling unsettled. God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and God’s generosity does not shrink because somebody else receives abundance.

Jesus breaks the world’s transactions through his life, ministry, death, and resurrection. Jesus changes people from living by expectations into living by transformation. Martin Luther’s truth that Christians are simultaneously saint and sinner means that daily change remains necessary: from lost to found, from despair or grumpiness to hope, and from calculating what is deserved to saying thank you for the invitation to go.
