Peter comes to Jesus looking for a boundary, a number that says forgiveness has gone far enough. Jesus refuses the tally and gives a story about grace that is meant to unsettle the heart. The servant receives mercy for a debt beyond anything he could ever repay, yet he walks out and grabs another servant by the throat over a much smaller debt. Grace washes over him, but it leaves no mark.

The parable turns the mirror toward every person who has received mercy but refuses to let mercy reshape how others are seen and treated. The deeper wound is not simply that the servant is unforgiving. Grace finds no soil in him. He takes the gift but will not let it open his eyes to the humanity of anyone else.

Philomena's forgiveness does not call evil good or ask the truth to disappear. Forgiveness and accountability are not enemies. She can forgive Sister Hildegard, tell the truth about what happened, and refuse to restore trust where trust has been destroyed. Grace does not require silence, nor does it require anyone to pretend that wounds do not hurt.

Jesus presses beyond the question of how many times forgiveness must be offered. The deeper question asks what kind of people grace is making. The gift of grace cannot change every past wound, but it can change what that past is allowed to do to the future.
