Bible Reading
Romans 14:1–121. “As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.”
[08:28]2. “One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables.”
[06:20]3. “Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.”
[08:36]4. “Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.”
[13:10]5. “One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.”
[17:38]6. “The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.”
[18:05]7. “For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.”
[18:43]8. “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.”
[18:54]9. “For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.”
[19:01]10. “Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.”
[20:48]11. “For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’”
[21:02]12. “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”
[21:04]Observation questions
- What were the two different practices causing tension in the Roman church, and what backgrounds helped explain why believers viewed them differently? [06:20]
- In verses 1–4, what two harmful responses does Paul forbid between believers who hold different convictions?
- What repeated phrase appears throughout verses 5–9, and where does it direct the attention of both groups? [18:05]
- According to verses 10–12, who will stand before God’s judgment seat, and whose life will each person give an account for? [21:04]
Interpretation questions
- Paul says believers should welcome one another “but not to quarrel over opinions.” How does this show the difference between receiving a fellow Christian and trying to make that person agree on every secondary matter? [10:34]
- Why is contempt just as dangerous as judgment in a church? How can a believer who feels free in an area be tempted to look down on someone with a more careful conscience? [12:43]
- Verse 4 says that another believer is the servant of “another” Master. How does Christ’s role as Lord shape the way Christians can offer correction, speak truth, and still avoid acting like they are the final judge? [13:42]
- Paul connects personal convictions about food and days with doing things “in honor of the Lord.” What signs might show that a person is seeking to honor Christ rather than simply insisting on doing things his or her own way? [18:43]
Application questions
- Is there a Christian you find it difficult to accept because of a difference in preference, personality, background, or conviction? What might it look like to treat that person as a brother or sister whom God has welcomed? [11:32]
- When disagreement arises, which temptation is more familiar: contempt that looks down on someone, or judgment that assumes the worst about them? What words, attitudes, or actions reveal that temptation in daily life? [12:43]
- Are there secondary matters that you have treated like primary matters? How can you hold your convictions honestly while leaving room for another believer’s conscience? [11:09]
- The deepest question is not, “Are they doing things my way?” but, “Are we seeking to honor Jesus Christ?” How could that question change one current disagreement in your family, workplace, school, or church? [18:43]
- The closer spokes move toward the center of a wagon wheel, the closer they become to each other. What would drawing nearer to Christ look like in a relationship where distance or tension has grown? [19:27]
- Since each believer will give an account to God, is there a harsh word, proud assumption, resentment, or refusal to forgive that needs to be addressed? What is one gracious step you could take this week? [21:30]
- Grace received must become grace extended. How might you become an instrument of God’s grace toward a specific person this week? [24:08]
