#StopWaitingStartServing
“It's a really straightforward idea, I think, isn't it? Be equipped and then do the work of ministry. But I think what hinders us from having this happen is we just get in our own way. I mean, we get so locked up in this idea of, well, I have to find out what my unique and individual spiritual gift is, or I have to find what my perfect role is to go serve before I can actually begin to do the work of ministry. When in reality, that creates for us this sort of paralysis by analysis where we're just sitting on the side lines waiting to figure out where I'm called specifically and what my specific gifting is before we actually go out and do the work that we were called to do.”

#UnityInService
“You see, Jesus' vision for GRC is not this place where some of the members are doing the work and overcompensating while others are inactive on the sidelines. No. His vision for the church is this body of believers where everyone is using the grace that they have received to be equipped and then do the work of ministry together, building the church up, reflecting him more until we reach the maturity that he is calling us to.”

#EveryMemberMatters
“``But the hard truth is when members remain on the sidelines, the church misses something that Christ intended to give the church through those members who are not functioning. Gifts remain unused. Other parts of the body are forced to compensate, and our growth, not just your growth or my growth or his growth or her growth, our growth as a church is hindered. The church may continue functioning, but it will not flourish as fully as it could when each part is doing its work.”

#MinistryForAll
“And notice what he says here, this grace has been given to each of us, not just a select few, but to each and every one of us. And what this means is that ministry is not reserved for pastors or for elders or for staff or some particularly talented group of Christians. No. It means that every person who belongs to Christ has received grace for ministry from him and therefore has some role to play within his body, the church.”

#GraceToServe
“Now what Paul is saying here is that every Christian belongs to the same body, but Christ gives grace to each member of that body for a particular function within the body. Now the grace that Paul describes here is not necessarily this idea of grace when we think of saving grace, where we have been saved by no effort or merit of our own. It's it starts with that, but it really is this idea of a grace to do the work of ministry. And so through our saving grace comes this serving grace that we have been given. And because it is grace, we contribute nothing to it and we do not decide it on our own. The idea here is that Christ who saves his people also gives his people what they need to participate and join with him in his good works.”

#LeadersEquip
“You see, another translation reads, to equip his people for the work of ministry. You see, when church leaders are functioning as they should, shepherding the flock through the teaching of the word and through spiritual direction and discernment and pastoral counseling and the congregation is being equipped by these things, the natural response and call and function of the congregation is to then go and do the work of ministry. And when these two things are happening together, there's this symbiotic relationship that takes place and the church is acting as it should. The diverse body of believers who have each been given grace for the work of ministry are now unified together and the church can be built up.”

#FaithIsCommunity
“Our Western culture, it teaches us to think about faith primarily as this private relationship between me and Jesus, and certainly, that's part of it. Each of us are called to this individual and private faith with him, but private faith is not the sole outcome of a faith and journey with Christ. Paul's vision for the church and for each of us, Jesus' vision for the church and for each of us is something far beyond just individual Christianity where individuals grow mature separately. No. He sees the entire church growing together as one body into the maturity of Christ corporately united.”

#AllCalledToServe
“You see, when we remain inactive, when we hold ourselves apart from the body and neglect the work of service for which we are each being equipped, we hinder more than our own spiritual growth. The entire body is affected by it. We have all received grace for ministry, and we are all called to work together to strengthen that body, to build it up.”
