Day 1: Thorn as Protection in Life’s Blows

The thorn Paul carried wasn’t punishment but preservation. It kept him grounded after divine revelations. God often uses persistent struggles not to harm but to guard our hearts from pride. What feels like repeated blows may shield us from greater spiritual danger. Grace protects even when it doesn’t comfort. [07:21]

“So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.”

Day 2: Today’s Manna for Today’s Burden

Grace isn’t stored like emergency rations but given fresh each morning. Like Israel gathering daily manna, we receive exactly what’s needed for present challenges. Tomorrow’s grace remains undelivered; yesterday’s has expired. Trust grows when we stop hoarding mercy and start gathering anew. [12:27]

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Day 3: Weakness as Power’s Display Case

Cracks in our strength don’t hinder God’s power—they frame it. Paul’s hardships became exhibits of Christ’s sufficiency. When human ability ends, divine capability begins. Our insufficiency isn’t a problem to solve but a canvas for God’s strength. [15:06]

Paul celebrated limitations as intimacy opportunities with Christ. Distresses—life’s narrow canyons—force us to lean into God’s presence. What squeezes us doesn’t diminish our faith but intensifies our experience of His nearness. [26:29]

Day 5: Unanswered Prayers as Eternal Testimonies

Paul’s unremoved thorn became a global encouragement. Our persistent struggles may be future testimonies in development. What we beg God to take away might become the story that sustains others. Grace writes legacies through our lingering thorns. [28:04]

Sermon Summary

Paul raises the question of how one man kept going through rejection, beatings, prisons, betrayal, loneliness, misunderstanding, and suffering, and the answer is not that Paul was stronger than everyone else. Grace is the answer. Grace is not simply God’s kindness, and grace is not permission to do whatever. Grace is God’s undeserved favor that forgives sinners, changes sinners, and creates saints.

Second Corinthians 12 brings Paul into one of the most personal places in his ministry. Paul has seen heaven. Paul has received revelations so great that pride could have destroyed him. The thorn comes “to keep me from becoming conceited,” and those words change everything. The thorn is not punishment. The thorn is protection. Grace sometimes protects more than it pleases, because God loves character more than comfort.

Paul pleads three times for the thorn to leave. Christ answers, but not with removal. Christ says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Grace is not proven only when God takes the pain away. Grace is revealed when God gives everything necessary for today. Israel did not receive forty years of manna at once, and God’s people do not receive forty years of grace in advance. Today’s grace is enough for today’s burden.

Weakness becomes the place where Christ’s power shows up. Weakness does not create God’s power. Weakness reveals it. God chooses what is weak, foolish, low, and despised so that no human being can boast in His presence. Paul’s boasting changes because grace changes his perspective. Before grace, the cry is, “Remove this.” After grace, Paul can say, “I will boast in this.”

Second Corinthians names infirmities, reproaches, needs, persecutions, and distresses, and Paul says he has learned to take pleasure in those places for Christ’s sake. The tight place, the narrow place, the place where the walls feel like they are closing in, becomes a platform for Christ’s strength. Grace produces the paradox: when Paul is weak, then Paul is strong.

The unnamed thorn welcomes every believer’s story into the text. Sickness, loneliness, disappointment, a prodigal child, depression, unanswered prayer, broken relationship, or physical limitation can all be placed there. Christ’s answer has not changed: “My grace is sufficient for you.”

But what do you do when you've prayed and heaven sings silent? What do you do when you've been faithful but the thorn is still there? What do you do when you've obeyed god yet the struggle hasn't disappeared? Because, eventually, every believer reaches a moment where they don't need another definition of grace. They need to discover whether grace is enough.”

It became, review your strength in my weakness. Maybe we need that prayer today. I don't know. Not like God remove all my promise. I mean, would that be a great prayer? But like God, reveal your strength in my weakness.”
