The Christian life is not a little grace at the start and then human grit the rest of the way. It is “all grace, all the way, every day.”

Gracelessness makes Christians disgraceful. A church can become disgraceful when people give one another only what is deserved, when anger, nitpicking, unforgiveness, and judgment fill the room. Grace makes a church winsome. Grace can be felt in the parking lot before anybody has language for it. The old division among Christians can almost be reduced to “pumpers and poppers.” Grace pumps life into the body. Disgrace pops whatever little bit of courage remains.

Grace must fill families and marriages too. A father can make an earring bigger than a son, and a son can make that same earring bigger than a father. Grace lays the earring down for love’s sake. Grace calls a boy handsome who has never heard it. Grace notices a wife’s dress instead of the price tag. Grace lets a spouse speak blessing over aging hair and changing bodies instead of keeping a cruel inventory.

Grace must also be received inwardly. Self-condemnation over appearance, weakness, and old sins is not holiness. When God says there is no condemnation, the Christian has no right to climb above God and become a harsher judge than the Lord of heaven and earth. Forgiveness stands because Christ earned it, not because the sinner deserved it.

Genesis begins with creation’s grace, and the Old Testament ends under a curse. The whole Bible, however, does not end with terror or uncertainty. God gets the last word, and the last word is grace: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.” Grace saves, grace carries through dangers, toils, and snares, and grace will still be the song ten thousand years from now.
