The Gospel According to Luke: The Blind can See

Luke sets two scenes side by side to show one big lesson: people can be physically close to Jesus and still be blind to who he is, while a blind beggar can see him clearly. Jesus takes the Twelve aside as the road to Jerusalem gets shorter and tells them exactly what is coming. The Son of Man will be handed over, mocked, insulted, spit on, flogged, killed, and raised on the third day. The gospel, according to God’s plan, includes both the cross and the resurrection. Jesus is not still dead. He has risen, he is alive, and he reigns.

Luke says three times that the disciples do not understand. The meaning is hidden from them, yet their own hearts cannot grasp it either. The disciples expect glory, victory, and a kingdom that looks strong right away. Jesus promises shame, suffering, death, and then resurrection. Their religious framework has no room for a Messiah who would suffer, so they likely hear Jesus’ words as something figurative rather than something that will literally happen.

Luke then brings Jesus near Jericho, where a blind man sits beside the road begging. The blind man hears that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by, but he cries out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” That title matters. The blind man sees Jesus as the promised Messiah before his physical eyes are ever opened. The irony is striking: the apostles cannot see the purpose of Jesus, but the blind beggar sees who Jesus is.

The crowd tries to silence the man, treating him like somebody unworthy of Jesus’ attention. The blind man only cries louder. His desperation echoes the persistent widow, the tax collector, the leper, the sinful woman, Jairus, and every person in Luke who knows that getting to Jesus matters more than preserving dignity in front of people. Jesus stops for the overlooked man because Jesus cares for the blind, the lame, the poor, the sinner, the outsider, and the person everybody else tries to push aside.

The blind man does not ask Jesus for charity. He asks for restoration: “Lord, I want to see.” Jesus gives him sight and says, “Your faith has saved you.” The man responds by following Jesus and glorifying God. Luke presents that response as the right one: eyes opened by grace lead to a life of following Jesus and worshiping God. Christ brings sinners not merely gifts, relief, or fire insurance, but wholeness and restoration to the Father.
