Bible ReadingRomans 1:1–32Verse 1: Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God.
[10:17]Verse 2: Which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures.
[14:30]Verse 3: Concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh.
[14:39]Verse 4: And was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.
[15:36]Verse 5: Through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.
Verse 6: Including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
Verse 7: To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 8: First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.
[16:20]Verse 9: For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers.
Verse 10: Asking that somehow by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
Verse 11: For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you.
[17:20]Verse 12: That is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.
[17:27]Verse 13: I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.
Verse 14: I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
Verse 15: So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
[17:41]Verse 16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
[19:56]Verse 17: For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
[24:29]Verse 18: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
[32:07]Verse 19: For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
[33:52]Verse 20: For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
[33:56]Verse 21: For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
[37:48]Verse 22: Claiming to be wise, they became fools.
[46:21]Verse 23: And exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
[47:11]Verse 24: Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves.
[49:19]Verse 25: Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
[49:31]Verse 26: For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature.
[49:42]Verse 27: And the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
[56:40]Verse 28: And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
[01:01:42]Verse 29: They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness.
[01:01:54]Verse 30: They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents.
[01:02:49]Verse 31: Foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
[01:03:09]Verse 32: Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
[01:03:26]Observation questions- What two words does Paul use to describe himself in verse 1, and what do those words show about his relationship with Jesus and his calling? [10:28]
- In verses 11–12, what does Paul hope will happen when he meets the Roman believers, and how is the encouragement meant to go both ways? [17:20]
- What does Paul say the gospel reveals and accomplishes in verses 16–17?
- According to verses 21–25, what exchanges do people make when they refuse to honour and thank God? [47:23]
Interpretation questions- Paul calls the message “the gospel of God” rather than Paul’s gospel or humanity’s gospel. Why does that matter when a believer is deciding what should shape their beliefs and choices? [11:39]
- Verse 17 says that righteousness is received by faith and lived out by faith. How does this protect believers from both trying to earn God’s acceptance and treating grace as permission to keep living in sin? [24:39]
- Paul says people are “without excuse” because God’s power and divine nature are visible in creation. What can creation and conscience reveal about God, and why is Jesus still necessary for people to know God’s saving love and truth? [37:25]
- Romans 1 names visible sins as well as sins of the heart and tongue, such as envy, gossip, pride, deceit, and being heartless. Why is it important that this list is read as an exposure of everybody’s need for mercy rather than a weapon against particular people? [53:14]
Application questions- Paul’s identity was first that he belonged to Jesus: a servant of Christ Jesus. What identity labels—success, relationships, work, reputation, past failure, or something else—most compete with belonging to Christ in your life? [10:51]
- The gathering of believers is meant to include a mutual exchange of faith and encouragement. What is one practical way you can come ready to strengthen somebody else, rather than only hoping to receive something yourself? [18:21]
- The gospel is God’s power for salvation, strong enough to break sinful patterns, addictions, and destructive thinking. Is there an area where you need to stop managing the problem alone and bring it honestly to Jesus and trusted believers for help? [01:06:25]
- Romans says that nobody can look down on another person while looking up at the cross. When are you most tempted to feel spiritually superior or to focus on somebody else’s sin? What would it look like to return to humility and gratitude for Christ’s mercy? [32:50]
- Idolatry is not only bowing to an image; it can mean giving created things the place that belongs to the Creator. Is there a good thing—such as approval, sport, sex, possessions, a relationship, comfort, or entertainment—that may be taking too much of your heart and attention? [47:31]
- God’s Word is a mirror, not binoculars for examining others. Which part of Romans 1 most challenges you personally: gratitude, worship, purity, honesty, speech, pride, envy, compassion, or something else? [53:21]
- Repentance means coming clean before God without blaming culture, circumstances, family, or other people: “I did it. It’s my fault. I’m sorry.” What would honest repentance look like in one specific situation this week? [01:09:16]
