Ephesians 2 sets the question down plain: what are the saints doing with all that has been taught? Paul speaks to the church at Ephesus as people who know what it is to be dead in trespasses and sins. God, rich in mercy, stepped in with great love, quickened dead folk, and saved by grace. Verse 10 then refuses to let grace sit still, because God’s grace makes a people who are “his workmanship,” created in Christ Jesus unto good works.
The text says God crafted with intention. The Creator does not save anybody just to sit, shine on Sunday, quote Scripture, and look good in Sunday best. God creates ambassadors who represent his nature and his character in the community. The faith walk is more than a job, because a job has a quitting time, but God’s assignment keeps calling. The text presses against selfishness and asks what is being done for others.
“Good works” becomes the repeated word because Paul says the saved life is created for good works, for good works, for good works. The call to contribution is not ordinary or arbitrary. God intends to work through saved people so light can shine into darkness and somebody can be helped along the way. The old song says it right: if somebody can be helped, cheered, or shown the wrong road, then living will not be in vain.
Christ commands movement, not sitting. Matthew’s “go” reaches the neighborhood, the community, and the people who remember what a person used to be. Paul calls the saints to reflect on what the Lord has done, because transformed lives ought to tell somebody that God can transform any life. Grace leaves no room for boasting, because nobody is special in himself. The saved person is just a nobody trying to tell anybody about Somebody who can save anybody.
The cross and resurrection stand underneath the whole charge. Christ came, died on Calvary, was laid in the borrowed tomb, and rose early the third day with all power in his hand. The risen Christ reigns forever, and his reign sends servants back onto the battlefield. The question remains urgent: what practical step can a born-again person take to reflect God’s character in everyday activity and make a difference where the community is hurting?
Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace creates an ongoing assignment God’s saving grace does not put a person on spiritual retirement. The faith walk is not like a job where the hours end and the worker knocks off. Grace places the saved life under the hand of the Creator, who has already ordained good works to be walked in. [46:46]
- 2. Every believer has kingdom work The text does not reserve purpose for the preacher, the deacon, or the person with a title. Every individual has worth, and every individual has a job assignment in kingdom building. The body suffers when gifted people stay in the pew and never exercise what God placed in them. [49:12]
- 3. Good works shine into darkness Paul’s “created for good works” means service is intentional, not random religious activity. God works through his people so that light enters dark places and somebody is helped along the way. A life is not measured by church attendance alone, but by whether mercy takes flesh in real acts of love. [50:06]
- 4. Changed lives must go back The community often remembers what a person used to be, and that memory can become a witness when God has truly changed the life. Transformation is not meant to be hidden inside the sanctuary. God sends redeemed people back where hurt is visible, so somebody else can see that change is possible. [53:06]
- 5. The risen Christ sends servants The gospel does not end at the borrowed tomb, because Christ got up with all power in his hand. His resurrection reign calls servants onto the battlefield, not into passive religion. The question is not only what Christ has done, but what his people are doing because he lives and reigns.
