The Lamb of God comes looking for sinners, just like Mary in the song. His fleece is white as snow, and everywhere lost sheep have gone, this Lamb has been looking for them. John 10 brings that picture into sharp focus with Jesus saying, “Truly, truly,” which means every ear ought to listen up because eternal things are on the line.
Jesus names himself “the door of the sheep.” The sheepfold picture is simple and beautiful. The shepherd lies down across the opening, and the sheep rest because the entrance is guarded. Jesus is not just pointing toward safety. Jesus is the safety. Jesus is the way in, the protector at the door, and the one who leads the sheep back out into green pasture.
The thieves and robbers are the scribes and Pharisees who cared more about power, praise, and tradition than the works of God. John 9 shows their blindness when a man born blind gets healed, and they would rather defend Sabbath rules than rejoice that a man can see. Their works religion steals people away from God, turns the Bible into a self help book, and makes human effort the center instead of Christ.
The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. False teachers still do that today, inside and outside the church, through bad theology, smooth platforms, itching ear religion, and even Bible verses twisted into lies. Paul calls this falling away “apostasy,” a standing away from the faith, and warns that deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons will come. Galatians 1 makes the line clear. Even an angel with another gospel is not to be trusted.
The Bereans show the faithful way forward. Acts 17 says they examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. First John says to test the spirits. The sheep must know the voice of the shepherd, and that voice comes through the holy Word of God.
John 10:11 brings the good news home. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Jesus becomes the Lamb of God at Calvary, dies for sinners, and says, “It is finished.” Through this door comes salvation, forgiveness, and abundant life that starts now, not merely after death. Psalm 23 finishes the picture: the Shepherd restores the soul, leads beside still waters, guards through the valley, and brings his sheep home forever.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Listening shapes faith and desire What enters the ear does not stay neutral. Music, voices, teachers, friends, and screens can train the heart toward trust or unbelief. Romans says faith comes by hearing, so the sheep cannot treat listening as a small thing when the soul is being formed by every voice it receives. [22:58]
- 2. The thief has only destruction Jesus uses the word “only” to uncover the thief’s motive. Deception may sound helpful, freeing, smart, or compassionate, but its end is always stealing, killing, and destroying. The sheep need clear eyes because spiritual danger often arrives with religious words and a calm voice. [26:47]
- 3. Apostasy begins with distorted truth A falling away rarely starts with open hatred of Jesus. Apostasy often begins when Scripture is trimmed, questioned, spiritualized away, or made to serve the approval of the world. A conscience can be seared slowly, until another gospel feels wiser than the gospel once received. [27:59]
- 4. Scripture tests every spiritual voice The Bereans were noble because eagerness did not replace examination. Even Paul’s words were measured by the Scriptures, which means no platform, personality, angel story, or emotional experience gets a pass. The sheep remain safe when the book is open and every voice is tested by the Shepherd’s voice. [38:19]
- 5. The door is crucified mercy Jesus is not a door made of advice, effort, tradition, or religious performance. The door is the good shepherd who lay down his life at Calvary and became the Lamb who takes away sin. Salvation and abundant life come through him alone, and no other entrance can carry a sinner into the Father’s pasture. [39:16]
