Ecclesiastes begins with biblical reality: life “under the sun” is life after the fall and before the judgment day. The Teacher looks at generations, sun, wind, streams, toil, and human desire, and finds that everything is hevel, frustratingly fleeting. Hevel is not saying that nothing matters; it is saying that life cannot be held onto, controlled, or made to last by human effort. The question of “gain” presses hard: what can anybody finally keep from all the striving, building, earning, and achieving?
The Teacher refuses the false brightness that pretends disappointment is not real. Disappointment runs from the small stuff to jobs, careers, childlessness, miscarriage, failed hopes, and the painful fact that people disappoint each other. The world promises “your best life now,” glamour, progress, and expertise, but those promises cannot fulfil what they offer. Disappointment, then, is not the end of the road. Disappointment is a signpost.
Chapter 3 holds together the seasons of life: weeping and laughing, mourning and dancing, loss and gain, war and peace. God sends seasons that cannot be neatly explained, and sorrow often teaches reality more deeply than easy laughter does. Lament becomes necessary because life under the sun is neither all sorrow nor all blessing.
God has made everything beautiful in its time and put eternity into human hearts. Eternity in the heart explains why beauty, friendship, food, art, sunsets, and love can feel as though they ought to last forever. Yet God has not allowed humanity to grasp his work from beginning to end. God alone does what endures forever, and God calls people to fear him because human beings cannot add to, take from, or finally master his work.
God also gives small, real gifts in the middle of a world that slips through the fingers. Joy in work, food, drink, friendship, a good day, a new recipe, a blackberry on a walk, and doing good to a neighbour are not saviours. God gives these things as gifts, not as idols that must carry the weight of eternity.
Jesus steps into life under the sun as God in flesh. Jesus takes judgment at the cross and brings those who trust him across from death to life. Jesus answers the longing for eternity, the need for justice, and the ache of disappointment. Jesus never disappoints.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Disappointment points beyond earthly promises [08:05] Disappointment exposes the lies attached to success, relationships, possessions, and personal achievement. Earthly things become crushing when they are asked to provide rescue, permanence, or ultimate meaning. Disappointment can become a signpost because it reveals that the heart has been looking for eternity in things that cannot last. [08:05]
- 2. Life under the sun is fleeting [11:34] Hevel names life as frustratingly fleeting, like breath on glass that quickly disappears. Human toil cannot secure lasting gain because death finally takes away what effort accumulates. Biblical realism does not deny goodness, but it refuses to make temporary gifts carry eternal weight. [11:34]
- 3. God gives joy within ordinary life [24:21] God does not call people to wait for some grand future achievement before receiving joy. Food, work, friendship, beauty, and doing good become fresh gifts when they are received from God rather than grasped as idols. Contentment grows when ordinary moments are treated as gifts, not as saviours. [24:21]
- 4. Eternity and justice belong to God [20:49] Eternity in the heart explains why finite beauty can awaken such deep longing. The hunger for justice also reveals that human beings know wickedness should not have the final word. God alone sees the beginning and the end, judges rightly, and does what endures forever. [20:49]
- 5. Jesus never disappoints his people [30:26] Jesus entered the disappointment, suffering, and death of life under the sun. Jesus bore judgment so that those who trust him cross from death to eternal life. Christ does not merely improve a difficult life; Christ brings people through judgment into the life for which their hearts were made.
