Deuteronomy 6 sets the matter before Israel right at the edge of the promised land. Moses gives fathers and mothers a plain word from God: love God, teach the children, and warn the children. The land ahead is full of grace, cities not built by Israel, wells not dug by Israel, vineyards and olive trees not planted by Israel. Yet the same good things can become dangerous when full bellies forget the Lord who brought Israel out of bondage.

Moses begins with the heart. The Lord is one Lord, and love for Him must take the whole person: heart, soul, mind, and strength. Jesus makes that love plain in John: the one who loves Him keeps His commandments. Love for God is not just a feeling or some emotion. Love has feet on it.
