God's love is the root of every gift — the Father gave first so that we could freely receive and then freely give. You are invited to remember that giving flows from being given to; generosity is not an obligation but a response to a Savior who poured out himself for the world. Practice receiving his grace so you can become a channel of that same grace to others. [46:07]
John 3:16 (ESV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Reflection: When you remember "God so loved that he gave," what one specific area of your life are you reluctant to give back to Jesus? Identify that area and name one concrete action you will take this week to begin surrendering it to him.
Generosity, practiced with faith, enlarges the sphere of blessing around a life and the church; withholding shrinks opportunities and influence. You are encouraged to see giving as a spiritual principle that opens doors for provision, mission, and a "bigger world" for others to enter. Consider giving not merely out of duty but as an act of trust that God multiplies what is freely scattered. [53:02]
Proverbs 11:24 (AMP) There is one who generously scatters, and yet increases all the more; and there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want.
Reflection: Where in the last twelve months did a decision to hold back result in smaller opportunities or relationships? Choose one area (time, money, or influence) and commit to one measurable act of scattering this month—what will you give and when?
The wise men brought gifts that symbolized surrender, worship, and even the pain of the cross — gold for kingship (a surrendered heart), frankincense for true worship, and myrrh for suffering and burial. You are invited to bring not just finances but the treasures of your life — your heart, your worship, and your wounds — to the feet of Jesus as an act of recognition that he is king. These offerings declare allegiance and open the life to what God wants to do. [01:01:41]
Matthew 2:1-12 (ESV) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
Reflection: Of the three gifts the magi brought — gold (surrender), frankincense (worship), myrrh (your pain) — which one is Jesus asking for from you right now? Pick one and describe one tangible thing you will bring this week.
Jesus teaches that the location of your treasure shows what your life is centered on; treasure means the most precious container of your time, talent, and resources. You are encouraged to inventory your top investments and notice whether they point to kingdom priorities or something else. Re-centering your treasure toward Jesus changes daily decisions, commitments, and the direction of your life. [01:03:51]
Matthew 6:21 (ESV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Reflection: List the top three places you currently invest your "treasure" (time, talent, money). Which of those will you intentionally re-center toward Jesus this month, and what is one measurable change you will implement to do so?
God desires your whole heart first; when he has that, everything else — career, marriage, finances, gifts — aligns and flows from that surrendered center. You are invited to honest surrender: give him your heart, not merely pieces of your life or occasional acts of service. If there is partial commitment, today's prayer is toward full surrender so his grace can reorder every other area. [01:07:02]
Deuteronomy 6:5 (ESV) You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Reflection: If God asked for your whole heart today, what percentage would you honestly give? Identify one barrier keeping you from 100% and one practical step you'll take this week to remove that barrier.
We celebrated a family moment by setting in Nico and Ansley Villareal as pastors over our middle schoolers, recognizing the grace of God on their lives and the New Testament pattern of laying on of hands. From there, I invited us into the Spirit of Christmas by returning to the origins of giving: God so loved that He gave. The Spirit of giving starts with God’s initiative—His love moves first—and we respond with open hands and open hearts. You can’t give what you haven’t received, so we receive grace, joy, and hope, and then we freely give.
I contrasted the simplicity of early Christian generosity and the legacy of Saint Nicholas with the pressures of modern consumerism. The spirit of this season is not debt; it’s love expressed through joyful, sacrificial generosity. Scripture promises that the world of the generous gets larger and larger, and we’re watching that promise shape our church through our Legacy lanes—Beyond campaigns at each campus and the Prison Church Network. From Napa’s building project and a fresh vision for Marin, to East Bay’s new facility search, Calgary’s expansion, Roseville’s growth, Santa Barbara’s plant, and the profound impact among our middle schoolers and in prisons, your generosity is building a bigger world for the gospel.
I then turned to the original Christmas gifts from the Magi and the three offerings Jesus still receives today. Gold represents a fully surrendered heart—when He has our heart, everything else follows. Frankincense points to true worship—costly, Spirit-lit devotion that rises like incense from a life on the altar. Myrrh is our pain—suffering, loss, and disappointments brought to the feet of Jesus. He wants your myrrh because He was broken to make you whole, and He heals what we bring to Him. Before any financial gift, the invitation is to offer your heart. Today is a call to full surrender: bring Him your gold, your frankincense, and your myrrh.
So god initiates and we respond as it says in the word freely you have received and then what freely give Well, you got to receive first before you give you got to receive grace before you can give it awayYou got to receive some joy before you can share it with somebody else So this is the spirit of generosity [00:47:58] (18 seconds) #ReceiveToGive
