Treasuring God's Word: Guarding Hearts, Reviving Souls

Psalm 119 presents the Bible not mainly as a doctrinal statement to be defended, but as the reliable testimony of who God is and what God’s word does in a life. The psalmist builds this long Hebrew alphabetic acrostic with care, from aleph to tav, as if to say the word of God reaches from A to Z. The word revives the dry and numb soul. The psalmist says life is down in the dust and asks God to give life through his word. Spiritual life is not kept alive by staying on a camp high. God breathes life into dust through the steady, necessary, simple gift of his word. Treasuring that word means setting a realistic time and place, reading smaller and slower if needed, memorizing strategically, and doing the next clear thing, like filling in a paint by the numbers picture one color at a time.
