God's Generous Gift: Wisdom to Discern Truth

First Kings 3 sets Solomon before the Lord with an almost unbelievable offer: ask for anything, and it will be given. The account sounds a little like Aladdin’s lamp, but the Lord’s offer comes from generous love, not magic. God had already shown kindness to David, taking a little shepherd boy from the field and making him the great king of Israel, in spite of David’s many sins. God counted David righteous through faith, not because David always did the right thing, and God continued that mercy by placing Solomon on the throne.

God’s generosity toward Solomon becomes a window into God’s generosity toward his people. Jesus gives the same kind of invitation when he says that the Father will give whatever is asked in his name. God has given daily bread, health, family, work, safety, and countless blessings that are hard even to count. God’s greatest gift, though, is his dear Son, offered on the cross for sinners, bringing forgiveness and the hope of everlasting life. The cross makes God’s love sure, no matter what the circumstances of life may bring.

Wisdom stands out as one of God’s greatest gifts because Solomon did not ask for “gazillions of dollars,” unlimited power, beauty, glory, or long life. Solomon asked for a discerning heart, the ability to know right from wrong and to govern God’s people well. God was pleased with that request because Solomon needed wisdom not only for himself, but for the sake of many others.

Wisdom remains necessary because life is full of ideas, temptations, traps, scams, and distractions. A fake bank email may look official, but a discerning heart must know the difference between what is legitimate and what is a trap. Spiritual deception is even more dangerous, because Satan still lies as he did in the Garden of Eden. False teachers still question baptism, the Lord’s Supper, the resurrection, and the truth of God’s Word.

Scripture gives the wisdom that matters most. The Holy Scriptures are able to make a person wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. A person can read the whole encyclopedia and still become a “smart fool” if the way to heaven is unknown and the fear of the Lord is missing. God gladly answers the prayer for wisdom, because wisdom leads to knowing him and his ways better.
