God gives humanity a purpose, and Genesis 1 makes it plain: men and women bear God’s image, are blessed to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and exercise dominion under him. God’s plan is not merely for people to exist, but for his image to spread across the globe through human lives that represent him rightly.
Humanity turns that good calling into a disaster. Genesis records a world that becomes wicked and murderous, until the flood comes. God meets Noah as he steps off the boat and gives what is still Plan A: be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and live under God’s purpose. Humanity fails again, and the failure gets even darker. Israel, meant to be a light to the Gentiles and humanity’s best representatives, participates in murdering God in the flesh.
Christ rises from the dead and gives Plan A again in Matthew 28. Jesus changes the wording, but not the mission: make disciples of all nations, baptize them, and teach them to obey everything he commanded. Christ’s authority in heaven and on earth now stands behind this purpose, and his presence remains with his people until the end of the age.
The gospel’s advance from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth proves that God’s people cannot keep the good news to themselves. The nations are no longer only far away, because the nations are here too. The lines between local ministry and global ministry have gotten blurry, but the church still has one mission.
Christ guarantees that Plan A will work this time. The gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed in the whole world, and then the end will come. Revelation 7 shows the finished picture: a countless multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne and the Lamb. The real question is not whether God will finish the job, but who will get on the team while he does it.
The angels’ question to the disciples still lands hard: why stand staring into heaven? Christ will return, and Maranatha remains the cry of the church, but there is a job to do until he comes. God calls each person to ask where his heart is being poked, whether for Uganda, Bosnia, homelessness, a neighbor, or another need. Humanity has a purpose, and God is good at showing the next step.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s Plan A Never Changed God’s purpose for humanity has remained steady from creation through the Great Commission. God made men and women to carry his image into the earth, not to live as purposeless consumers of life. Christ’s command to make disciples is not a replacement for humanity’s calling but its Spirit-empowered fulfillment. [44:06]
- 2. Failure Does Not Cancel God’s Purpose Humanity turns God’s good gifts toward wickedness, violence, and even the murder of Christ. God still does not abandon his purpose or start looking for a different kind of plan. Christ takes human failure into himself and raises up a remade people who can fulfill what fallen humanity could not. [42:41]
- 3. The Nations Are Both Far and Near The gospel reached distant places because believers refused to let Jerusalem remain the center of their obedience. The nations now live next door, across town, and within ordinary daily relationships. Global mission and local faithfulness belong together because the earth has become deeply connected. [45:17]
- 4. Christ Guarantees the Mission’s Completion Jesus does not present worldwide witness as a fragile project that depends on human competence alone. Christ promises that the gospel will be proclaimed among all nations, and Revelation shows the crowd that will stand before the Lamb. The church serves with urgency because the outcome is secure, not because the outcome is uncertain. [46:38]
- 5. Stop Staring and Start Obeying Heavenly hope can become an excuse for earthly passivity when believers only wait for Christ’s return. The angels call the disciples away from staring into the sky and back toward the work Christ assigned. God often gives purpose through the next faithful step rather than a full map of the future.
