God's Sovereignty: Hope and Assurance in All Things
Devotional
Day 1: Trusting God's Sovereignty in Trials
God's sovereignty is a profound truth that assures us He is in control, even in our suffering. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things together for good for those who love Him. This doesn't mean that every situation is good, but that God can bring good out of any situation. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us, taking our deepest pains to God, which assures us that He knows and feels our struggles. Trusting in God's sovereignty means believing that He is at work for our good, even when circumstances seem bleak. [06:55]
Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV): "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Reflection: Think of a current trial you are facing. How can you actively trust in God's sovereignty and look for the good He might bring from it?
Day 2: The Comfort of the Holy Spirit's Intercession
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in our lives by interceding for us with groanings too deep for words. This intimate connection assures us that God knows and feels our pain, providing comfort and hope in our darkest moments. The Spirit's intercession is a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles; God is actively involved in our lives, working for our good. This truth encourages us to lean on the Holy Spirit for strength and guidance. [04:14]
Romans 8:26-27 (ESV): "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need the Holy Spirit's intercession today? How can you invite Him to intercede for you in that specific situation?
Day 3: Embracing the Golden Chain of Salvation
The "Golden Chain" of salvation—foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification—outlines God's invincible purpose for our lives. These affirmations assure us of our secure place in God's eternal plan, giving us confidence in our spiritual journey. Understanding this chain helps us see that our salvation is not based on our efforts but on God's sovereign will and purpose. This truth provides a foundation for living with assurance and hope. [23:05]
Ephesians 1:4-5 (ESV): "Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will."
Reflection: Reflect on the "Golden Chain" of salvation. How does knowing that your salvation is secure in God's plan change the way you live your daily life?
Day 4: The Unshakeable Love of Christ
The assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ transforms how we face life's challenges. This truth encourages us to live boldly, trusting in God's unwavering love. Knowing that we are more than conquerors through Him gives us the strength to overcome obstacles and live with confidence. This understanding of Christ's love is a powerful motivator to persevere in faith, no matter what we face. [38:56]
Romans 8:38-39 (ESV): "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Reflection: What is one challenge you are currently facing? How can the assurance of Christ's unshakeable love empower you to face it with confidence?
Day 5: Living with Hope and Assurance
The promise that all things work together for good gives us hope in seemingly hopeless situations. By embracing this promise, we can face life's uncertainties with confidence, knowing that God's purpose will ultimately prevail. This hope is not based on wishful thinking but on the solid foundation of God's character and promises. Living with this assurance allows us to navigate life's ups and downs with a sense of peace and purpose. [13:42]
Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV): "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."
Reflection: Think of a situation that feels hopeless. How can you remind yourself of God's promise to work all things together for good and find hope in His plans for your future?
Sermon Summary
Romans 8 is often considered the pinnacle of biblical teaching, and today we explored its profound truths, particularly focusing on verse 28. This verse encapsulates the miracle of the Christian life, asserting that "all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose." This promise is not just a comforting thought but a deep theological truth that shapes our understanding of God's sovereignty and love.
We began by examining the context of this promise, noting that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words, taking our pains and griefs directly to God. This sets the stage for understanding how God uses every aspect of our lives, including suffering and pain, to mold us into the image of Jesus. The five unshakable convictions in verse 28 remind us that God is actively working for our good, in all things, for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
The narrative of personal experiences, such as the story of a miscarriage and the subsequent birth of a child, illustrates how God can bring good out of seemingly hopeless situations. These experiences teach us to trust in God's plan, even when we cannot see the good that will come from our trials. The story of dealing with bullying further exemplifies how God uses our past pains to equip us to help others.
Verses 29 and 30 introduce five undeniable affirmations, often referred to as the "Golden Chain," which outline God's invincible purpose for our lives: foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. These affirmations assure us of God's eternal plan to conform us to the image of Christ.
Finally, we explored five unanswerable questions posed by Paul, which reinforce the security and assurance we have in God's love. These questions highlight that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, making us more than conquerors through Him. This understanding transforms how we perceive life's challenges, encouraging us to live with the confidence that God's love and purpose are unshakeable.

Sermon Clips
God uses the events in our lives, God uses the suffering of this life, uses the pain, uses the good things, the bad things, and everything in between to shape us to conform us into the image of Jesus. Last week we saw in chapter 8: 17-27 God uses even our suffering, our pain, like I say, our difficulties to shape us, to mold us. [00:02:11]
The Holy Spirit takes all our hurts, all our pains, all our griefs, and he takes them directly to God the Father, Abba Father, which sets up the context for what we read in verse 28. But verses 26 and 27 say this: likewise, the spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to what to pray for as we ought. [00:04:01]
God works. Now, as you have eyes of Faith, you start to see this more and more. God works, and over the years, the more I look back, even before I was a Believer, I have to tell you, God was at work. Oh, the stupid things I did. Oh my goodness, I should not be here. [00:07:52]
God is at work for your good. Amen. And again, that takes Faith. There comes a point where we have to take a step of faith and embrace that and get a hold of that because without faith, you won't see it, and you won't get a hold of it. God is at work for your good. [00:09:44]
God works for your good, and it says in all things. In all things. That includes the suffering, that includes the darkness, that includes the good times. The fourth unshakable conviction is it tells us it's reserved for those who love him. Amen. For those do you see where it says that in your Bible? [00:11:20]
God's ultimate purpose in your life is to conform you into the image of Jesus, to sculpt you, to mold you into the image of Jesus. And so those are five unshakable convictions within verse 28. And as you grow more mature in the Lord over the years, you see the profoundness of this verse. [00:12:09]
God could take something that has you just can't imagine how we could take it and take something good out of it. That was a big Learning lesson for me. You don't learn that in seminary. You learn that in real life. Well, verses 29 and 30 contain what are called five undeniable affirmations in your life. [00:22:21]
God's purpose, God's plan for your life is to make you into the image, to conform you into the image of Jesus. Jesus is the second Adam. The first Adam blew it. We're walking around in this first Adam body, but we're getting the second Adam body one day. Amen. I look forward to it. [00:23:14]
The call of God awakens a Believer to accept Jesus. Amen. And when the gospel is preached, the Holy Spirit comes and convicts the unbeliever in regards to sin, righteousness, and judgment. He convicts people in regards to their personal sin. He convicts them, convinces them, persuades them in regards to their lack of righteousness. [00:30:04]
In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Amen. The answer is no, these things can't conquer you. These can't things can't separate you from the love of the Lord. Now the seventh thing, remember what that was? It was the sword that could separate your head from your body. [00:39:35]
For I am sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present or things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our lord. Amen. Amen. Yes. Amen. [00:41:08]
We know that God works all things out. Amen. For your good. This is the Invincible plan of God. This is the Invincible purpose of God for your life in these verses. Father, we come to you this morning, and we thank you for these incredibly encouraging words. If God is for you, who can be against you? [00:43:09]
