Bible ReadingHebrews 4:1-13 “Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, ‘So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."’ And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: ‘On the seventh day God rested from all his works.’ And again in the passage above he says, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, God again set a certain day, calling it ‘Today.’ This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.’ For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
[33:27]Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
Colossians 2:16-17 “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.”
[52:01]Psalm 95:7-11 “Today, if only you would hear his voice, ‘Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways." So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."’”

- What kinds of unfinished things tend to make people feel restless rather than at peace? [25:57]
Interpretation questions- Hebrews 4 says the good news was proclaimed, but some did not enter God’s rest because they did not believe and obey. What does that suggest about the connection between faith, obedience, and rest? [44:23]
- Hebrews 4 speaks about a Sabbath-rest that still remains for the people of God. In what sense does that rest seem bigger than simply taking a day off? [45:21]
- Hebrews 4:12-13 connects God’s rest with God’s Word exposing the heart. Why might stopping and becoming quiet bring hidden fears, guilt, or control issues to the surface? [47:39]
- Colossians 2:16-17 says Sabbath is a shadow and Christ is the reality. How does that keep Sabbath from turning into a harsh rule or a way of judging other people? [51:41]
Application questions- What usually makes it hardest to stop for a real Sabbath day: unfinished work, financial pressure, family logistics, digital distraction, or something else? What does that pressure reveal about where trust is thin right now? [44:23]
- If a day of rest has to be prepared for, what would it look like to use the next six days differently so that stopping is actually possible? What is one practical thing that could be done ahead of time? [01:03:12]
- When life slows down, what tends to rise to the surface first—guilt, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, the urge to be productive, or something else? How might God be meeting someone there rather than condemning them? [47:39]
- Where has rest quietly become recovery for more work instead of delight in God? What would it look like for one day to feel holy, unhurried, and given back to him? [31:23]
- Jesus keeps Sabbath from becoming legalism. Has there been more temptation to ignore Sabbath altogether, or to become rigid and self-protective about it? What would grace-filled obedience look like instead? [52:01]
- A Sabbath day is never picture-perfect, and there is usually a smudge on the window somewhere. What kind of imperfection would be most likely to make someone give up on the practice entirely? How could that person keep going without pretending it is easy? [01:01:21]
- If Sabbath is a way of “starting eternity early,” what part of that vision sounds most needed right now: stopping striving, trusting God with undone things, making more room for people, or simply learning to delight again? [45:21]
