God's Relentless Pursuit: Known, Seen, and Loved

God’s pursuit is the movement of his character toward his people. God’s faithfulness, peace, holiness, omniscience, omnipresence, love, and power are not distant ideas. God gives exactly what his people need from himself at exactly the right time, because the God who created the universe wants relationship with them.

David’s prayer in Psalm 139 carries extra weight because David knew betrayal, being overlooked, guilt, grief, fear, victory, and the need to draw close to God. Psalm 139 declares that God knows the whole truth, not merely the version people present. God knows every thought, action, word, sin, struggle, and repentance, yet he has never walked away. God does not pursue the perfect, but he does perfectly pursue his people.

Hagar’s wilderness reveals that God is El Roi, the God who sees. Hagar was alone, pregnant, mistreated, removed from her people, and unable to rescue herself. God met her there. God’s pursuit is not limited to strong, composed, spiritually successful places. God pursues people into the wilderness, into the exposed and desperate places where they have nothing left to prove.

David’s question, “Where can I go from your Spirit?” receives one answer: nowhere. Psalm 139 says that even if someone makes a bed in the depths, God is there. The depths are not merely a hard season someone passes through. The depths can become a place where someone has settled for a while, and God still says, “I will meet you right there.”

Corrie ten Boom’s life shows that suffering is not proof of God’s absence. Ravensbrück was evil. The fleas, starvation, abuse, and loss were not good. Yet God did not abandon Corrie and Betsy there, and even the fleas became an unexpected protection that allowed Scripture, worship, and prayer to continue. God does not promise escape from every dark place, but no pit is so deep that God is not deeper still.

Psalm 139 also declares that God formed each person before performance, achievement, appearance, or another person’s attention could assign value. God-sized longing cannot be carried by a spouse, a friend, or any human relationship. God pursues because his holy love desires to restore people to what he created them to be. God calls his people to stop hiding, wrestle honestly with him, receive mercy, surrender to transforming love, and pursue him right back.
