The story of the Bible begins with the profound truth that God is love. This is not just a characteristic of God, but His very essence. Love is not an abstract concept or a fleeting emotion; it is the core of who God is and the driving force behind all He does. From the very first verse of Scripture, we see that God’s actions are motivated by love, and everything He creates is an outpouring of that love. You are not an accident or a product of random chance; you are the intentional creation of a God whose love is deep, complete, passionate, and eternal. No matter how you feel or what you face, you can be absolutely sure that God is relentlessly and faithfully in love with you, and there is nothing you can do to earn His favor—you already have it. [26:22]
1 John 4:8 (ESV)
"Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love."
Reflection: In what area of your life do you struggle to believe that God’s love for you is real and unconditional? How can you remind yourself today that you are already fully loved by Him?
When God created humanity, He did so in a unique and personal way, forming us in His own image. This means your value, purpose, and identity are not defined by the world, your achievements, or your failures, but by the One who made you. God, as a relational community—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—created you to reflect His love and relational nature. No matter what questions you have about your worth or purpose, the most important thing you can know about yourself is that you are deeply loved by your Creator. Your identity is secure in Him, and He took His time to form and fashion you with care and intention. [38:25]
Genesis 1:26-27 (ESV)
"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
Reflection: What voices or influences have shaped your sense of identity? How can you root your identity more deeply in the truth that you are created and loved by God?
Unlike the rest of creation, which God spoke into existence, when it came to humanity, God drew near. He formed man from the dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, showing His desire for closeness and intimacy with us. This act reveals a God who is not distant or detached, but one who is invested, present, and longing to be with His people. Throughout the entire story of Scripture, God’s longing is to dwell with humanity, to be close, and to share life with us. You are invited into a relationship with a God who comes near, who is not afraid to get “dirty” in forming you, and who desires to be intimately involved in your life. [42:23]
Genesis 2:7 (ESV)
"Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature."
Reflection: How can you intentionally draw near to God today, knowing that He longs to be close to you and is invested in every detail of your life?
After creating the world and humanity, God set apart the seventh day as a special time of rest, blessing, and sanctification. The Sabbath is not about restriction or prohibition, but about the joy and privilege of spending uninterrupted time with the God who loves you. Just as lovers set aside special days to be together, God established the Sabbath as a weekly reminder of His desire to be with you. It is a day to rest in His presence, to be refreshed, and to enjoy community with Him and with others. The Sabbath is a gift—a sign that you are valued, cherished, and invited into relationship with your Creator. [45:45]
Genesis 2:2-3 (ESV)
"And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation."
Reflection: What would it look like for you to set aside intentional time this week to rest in God’s presence and enjoy uninterrupted fellowship with Him and those you love?
The world often measures worth by achievements, possessions, or popularity, but your true value is found in your Creator. God was thinking of you when He created the universe, and He continues to pursue you with relentless love. No matter where you find yourself—whether at the top or feeling low—God’s love defines your worth and gives your life meaning. The Bible is not just any story; it is a love story about a God who will stop at nothing to be with His people. You are invited to trust in this love, to believe in your value, and to live each day knowing that you are known, loved, and pursued by your Creator. [52:31]
Psalm 139:13-14 (ESV)
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."
Reflection: What is one practical way you can live out your God-given worth today, especially in moments when you are tempted to doubt your value?
From the very first words of Scripture, we are introduced to a God who is not distant or detached, but deeply relational and loving. The story of creation is not just a record of how the universe came to be, but a revelation of the very heart of God—a God who is love, who exists in community, and who creates out of the overflow of that love. The Bible is not a rulebook or a collection of abstract doctrines; it is a love story, a narrative of a God who relentlessly pursues relationship with His people.
When we look at the creation account, we see that God is both creative and communicative. He speaks the universe into existence, not because He needs anything, but because love by its very nature seeks to give, to create, and to bless. The Hebrew word for God, “Elohim,” hints at God’s communal nature—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—showing us that love has always existed in relationship. This love is not passive or abstract; it is active, self-giving, and always seeking the good of the other.
Humanity holds a unique place in this story. Unlike the rest of creation, which God spoke into being, He formed humanity with His own hands and breathed His own breath into us. This intimate act reveals how deeply invested God is in each of us. Our identity, value, and purpose are not defined by the world, but by the One who made us in His image. We are not accidents or afterthoughts; we are the intentional handiwork of a loving Creator.
God’s desire for closeness is further seen in the gift of the Sabbath—a day set apart, blessed, and filled with His presence. The Sabbath is not a restriction, but an invitation to rest in God’s love, to spend intentional time with Him and with one another. It is a weekly reminder that our worth is found not in what we do, but in who we are to God.
No matter where we find ourselves—whether on the heights of success or in the depths of loneliness—God’s love remains constant. He was thinking of you from the very beginning, and He continues to pursue you, inviting you to trust Him and to find your true identity in His love. The story of the Bible is ultimately the story of a God who will stop at nothing to be with His people.
Genesis 1:1-5, 26-27; 2:1-3, 7 — (Creation, humanity made in God’s image, the Sabbath, and God’s intimate act of forming Adam)
- 1 John 4:8
(“God is love.”)
- John 1:1-3
(“In the beginning was the Word…”)
Friends, I want to tell you today that the fact that you are deeply loved by God...that right there, that truth, the fact that you are deeply loved by God, that should increasingly be the core of your identity, what you can know about yourself with most confidence. Friends, if you don't know anything else about yourself, know this, that you are deeply loved by the one who made you.
The Bible is a story, friends. The Bible is more than a rule book. It's more than a fairy tale. It's not a fictional story. It's a real story. And friends, throughout this series, we are going to be talking about the whole story, the whole narrative of Scripture, one day at a time. [00:24:09]
In 1 John 4, verse 8, the Bible alerts to us the person that God is. And it gives us a simple equation. In 1 John 4, verse 8, it says, He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. Friends, never forget that. That's the person that God is. [00:25:50]
Love isn't love because love has a name. Love has a name in its name. It's God because God is love. [00:26:22]
If you think about love, love can't really exist in a vacuum. In other words, if God was, you know, by himself for, you know, eternity past, whatever that means, then how could God truly be love if there's no one to bestow his love upon? [00:26:35]
Creation was not the result of loneliness or need on God's part. It's not as if God was, you know, bored and he was like, let me just start creating things. But rather, creation was the overflow of divine love. In other words, friends, we are going to see that God, when he created our universe, he created it out of love. [00:27:10]
To say God is love, I want to suggest to you all today, is to say the whole truth all at once. In other words, to say that God is love is to say everything there is you need to know about God. Right? If you don't know anything about God, know these three words, that God is love. [00:28:16]
Love is not merely a feeling or an emotion or a, man, I just feel so good. It's not that. Love is a principle. And that principle says, I'm going to put your wants, your needs, your desires, and your dreams in front of my own wants, desires, and dreams. [00:28:54]
True love, at the end of the day, it throws itself almost recklessly for the benefit of the other. That's what true love does. Right? It's not what I want, it's what you want. Right? True love says, you are more important to me more than I am to myself. And this is the kind of person that scripture reveals to us of who God is. [00:29:17]
One thing you can be absolutely sure of today is this, is that God is deeply, completely, passionately, relentlessly, faithfully, eternally in love with you. And there is quite literally nothing you can do about it. Friends, there is nothing that you can do to earn God's favor precisely because you already have it. [00:30:05]
In the beginning was the Word. Hey, that sounds like Genesis, right? Genesis, the whole narrative of Scripture, it opens up by saying, you know, in the beginning, God. He did what? He created the heavens and the earth. We have similar language here. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him nothing was made that was made. [00:31:03]
So with this in mind, that God is love, I think that we can render Genesis chapter 1 verse 1 theologically and grammatically accurately this way. In the beginning, love created the heavens and the earth. In the beginning, love created. Friends, I want to say this, that you were created out of love. You're not an accident. [00:32:31]
God is love and everything that God does is an act of love, friends. And so creation, at the end of the day, it was an act of love. You were created out of love. [00:33:17]
Genesis chapter 1 introduces us to a God who is creative and communicative. A God, he is creative and he's communicative. Now, the reason why this is important, especially God communicating, is, I mean, why do we communicate? Well, the reason why we communicate is because we want to be understood. Friends, in Scripture, we are alerted to a God who is intentional. [00:35:37]
God could have just thought the whole universe into existence and it would have appeared. But God intentionally went out of his way to speak, to communicate, and then that thing that he was making, it came to be. Now, this is important. This alerts us to the fact that God, he's a relational God. He's a relational God. [00:36:10]
Your identity, value, purpose, all of that is found in Christ. It's found in God. It's found in the one who created you, who formed you, and who fashioned you, friends. That's what you can know about yourself with most confidence. If you don't know anything else about yourself, know this, that you are deeply loved by God. You're deeply loved by God, and you were created in his image, friends. [00:38:59]
When it was time for God to make humanity, God did something different. He did something different. He did something a little strange. Verse 7, Genesis chapter 2 says, And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and then he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. [00:40:01]
We get this picture of a God. He comes close. He comes up close, and he breathes into humanity's nostrils the breath of life, and he wakes up. Friends, we are introduced to a God who longs to be close, to a God who longs to be with humanity. In other words, friends, let's use this language. God is invested in humanity, right? He invested his time, right? He was content to get, you know, a little dirty. [00:41:38]
You were created in God's image, and he took his time to make you. You're not an accident. You're not an accident. God, the creator of the universe, who created the stars, who created all the galaxies that you see, He, for some reason, was content to, you know, let me take my time here and make and form humanity. This is a God who's proximate. This is a God who's, let's use this language, this is a God who invites intimacy. [00:42:23]
God desires to be with his people. Friends, that is one of the big themes of Scripture, that God longs to be with his people. Like, from Genesis all the way through to Revelation, the entire Bible, it's about this God who was longing to be with his people, friends. This is a God who's close. This is a God who is proximate. And this is a God who longs to be with humanity. [00:42:55]
The reason why it's so special and so holy is because God filled that day with his presence. And, friends, this is what it means to keep the Sabbath. This is how you keep the Sabbath. You ready? This is at the heart, at the very heart of what it means to keep the Sabbath. To spend time with the God who longs to spend time with you because he loves you so much. That's how you keep the Sabbath, friends. You spend time with the God who longs to spend time with you. [00:46:26]
Friends, I want you to think of the Sabbath as that kind of day, friends, kind of like a date with God. It's a weekly reminder that God is your creator, that God is your sustainer, and that God is your friend, and that God, at the end of the day, he longs to spend time with you. You spend time with him because he wants to spend time with you, and he is love, and by extension, you spend time with this cool, beautiful, amazing people, right? [00:48:32]
You see, friends, we were never made for us. We were made for so much more than that. You were made in the image of God. You were made to live for the one who created you, for the one who, you know, sustains you, for the one who defines you. And it's his love that screams in the black. I'm right here. And it doesn't matter if you're known by billions or by none. You're known by him. [00:51:30]
Friends, I want to tell you today that the creator God, he loves you. And he longs to spend time with you, friends. [00:51:56]
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Yes. Amen. He created everything that you see. He is your creator. You were created in his image. He loves you. He took his time to create you and form you and fashion you. But what about this? In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And watch this. And he was thinking of you. [00:52:07]
Friends, I want to suggest to you today that the Bible isn't just any story. It's not just any story. I want to suggest to you today, friends, that the Bible is a love story. It's a story about a God who longs to be with his people, about a God who is relentlessly pursuing his people at any and all costs to himself. [00:52:46]
I want you to remember that your value and your worth is not defined by what the world tells you. Your value and your worth is found in your creator, in the one who formed you and fashioned you and made you and created you. That's where your identity, that's where your worth is found in, friends. [00:53:10]
Wherever you may find yourself and whether you're, you know, struggling with something, whether you're struggling with your value, your worth, your identity, whether you feel like you're alone in a situation, friends, I want to remind you today and encourage you today that there is a creator God who created you and he loves you and he has at the end of the day, no matter what happens, friends, he is working behind the scenes to bring about the best preferable outcome. In other words, God, at the end of the day, he has your best interest at heart. [00:53:56]
God didn't just create humanity and just abandon them as we are going to see God. It doesn't matter where we're at in this story. God is relentlessly pursuing his people. Why? Because he loves them and because he wants and longs to be with them. [00:54:23]
