First Kings 17 opens with Elijah standing bold before Ahab, declaring that no dew or rain will fall except by God’s word. Yet God does not move Elijah from the palace to another platform. God tells Elijah to get in the cut, to turn eastward, hide himself by the brook Cherith, and let ravens feed him there. The cut becomes that place between where somebody thought they would be and where they are right now.
The road of obedience does not always move straight up and forward. The route can go from the valley to the mountain and back to the valley, from notoriety and activity to isolation, even from the palace to the projects. God’s route is not rejection. God positions His people through bends in the road, and once the destination has been surrendered to God, the direction cannot be dictated by human preference.
God tells Elijah to hide himself, using the language of moving away from people and getting close to God. Cherith means cut off, and the cut is not punishment for doing wrong. God uses that private place to prepare His servants for a greater place than the one they have left. Elijah’s public proclamation before a king is followed by private preparation beside a brook.
The promise in the cut is found in God’s words, “It shall be.” The drought around Elijah contradicts what God has promised, but God’s promise does not depend on what the surroundings look like. God remains the One who supplies, heals, sustains, and brings His word to pass. “It shall be” becomes the confession that holds faith steady when the bills are high, the diagnosis is troubling, or the job situation is uncertain.
The text also moves Elijah from here to there. God has assigned the brook, the ravens, and the provision to a particular place. The blessing cannot be demanded in a place of disobedience, because God commanded the ravens to feed Elijah there. The difference between blocked gifts and flowing gifts may be the grace assigned to a specific there.
The timing-play image presses the point further. God sends the ball to the spot, but the receiver must be in the right place at the right time. The call is to ask God where there is, receive the courage to move, and stay there until God speaks again. Christ Himself becomes the first and deepest there, because relationship with the Lord is the place where provision, peace, joy, and salvation begin.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The route is not rejection [37:09] God can lead a faithful person through roads that feel like retreat. Isolation, discouragement, and unexpected reversals do not automatically mean that God has abandoned the assignment. God knows the path, including the bends that cannot yet be seen. [37:09]
- 2. There is a promise in the cut [43:34] God’s “it shall be” stands even when the environment looks dry. Faith does not deny the drought, the pressure, or the unanswered questions. Faith holds God’s word above the evidence of the moment because God is not a man that He should lie. [43:34]
- 3. Provision is assigned to there [47:19] God commanded the ravens and prepared the brook at Cherith, not wherever Elijah preferred to remain. Some provision requires a move in mindset, relationships, habits, location, or obedience. The issue may not be God’s unwillingness to provide, but resistance to the place He has appointed. [47:19]
- 4. Grace belongs to a particular place [51:25] The same gifts can be blocked in one place and flow freely in another. God’s assignment includes grace for the people, work, church, and circumstances connected to that place. Popularity and appearance cannot determine where God has commanded the blessing. [51:25]
- 5. Christ is the deepest place called there [01:09:41] The move from here to there begins with being reconciled to the Lord. Provision without Christ cannot satisfy the deepest need of the soul. Salvation, restored fellowship, and connection to God’s people bring a person into the place where real life begins.
