Sermon Summary

John 16 sets the disciples right in front of trouble before trouble ever gets there. Jesus tells them the truth because He is nothing but the truth, and He does not want His own to stumble, be shocked, or get offended when persecution comes. The world would put them out of the synagogue, and some would even kill them while thinking they were doing God service. Jesus names the root of that hatred plain, because they have not known the Father nor the Son.

The warning in John 16 is not meant to scare God’s people away, but to get them ready. The gospel is going forward because Jesus Christ is the gospel, and the devil has never been able to stop it. The apostles would suffer, James would be killed, John would be spared for Patmos, and the book of Revelation would come out of that suffering. God knew it all beforehand, and Jesus told His own before it came to pass.

The first great promise is the Comforter. Jesus says it is expedient that He go away, because if He departs, He will send the Comforter. The Holy Spirit is not an it, but He, the Spirit of truth. The Holy Spirit is to God’s people what Christ had been to the apostles, dwelling in them, comforting them, and keeping them sealed until the day of redemption.

The promise of teaching and guidance comes in verses 13 and 14. The Spirit of God guides into all truth and searches the deep things of God. First Corinthians 2 says eye has not seen and ear has not heard the things God has prepared for them that love Him, but God reveals them by His Spirit. Those deep things are for the saved, born into the family of God, but willingness to be led matters.

Ephesians 4 shows that the Holy Spirit can be grieved. Bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking, and malice are not little things. The Spirit is sensitive, and kindness, tenderheartedness, and forgiveness are not to be picked out for some people and withheld from others. God’s forgiveness in Christ becomes the measure.

John 16 and John 14 also give the promise of Christ coming again, the promise of answered prayer, the promise of peace, and the promise of victory. Christ prepares a place, opens access by His blood, gives peace not like the world gives, and makes His people the winning side. First Corinthians 15 says it plain: thanks be unto God, which giveth victory through the Lord Jesus Christ.
