Sermon Summary

The images of FedEx, Baskin Robbins, Tostitos, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Bronx Zoo make a simple point: hardly anything is an accident. The arrow in the FedEx logo was always there. The 31 in Baskin Robbins was always there. The skyline hiding under the Bronx Zoo animals was always there. The fact that something has not been noticed does not mean it has not been present.

Genesis puts Jacob in that same kind of place. Jacob leaves Beersheba and heads toward Haran, and the text says he comes to “a certain place.” The writer of Genesis leaves that place unnamed at first because the point is not the map. The point is the God who is not trapped in one city, one temple, one holy spot, or one predictable location. This God is in Beersheba. This God is in Haran. This God is in certain places that do not even have a name yet.

Jacob sleeps with a stone for a pillow and sees the ladder between heaven and earth. The angels go up and down, and God speaks promise over Jacob. God gives the land, promises presence, and repeats the word first given to Abraham: all the nations of the earth will be blessed through this family. The presence of God is not just for one household. The blessing of God is moving outward.

Jacob wakes up and says the line that gives the whole story its weight: “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” Jacob does not make God present by noticing. Jacob only wakes up to the presence that was already there. Bethel, the house of God, gets its name because God’s presence gives meaning to the place.

The danger is level one learning, just seeing the big block letters and missing the arrow. A life can get very good at climbing ladders: grades, college, internships, jobs, promotions, corner offices. A person can climb for years and never ask what building the ladder is leaning against.

God speaks in this world. God speaks in church sanctuaries, parking lots, family joy, well-timed songs, and friends who say exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment. The call of Jacob’s ladder is to take a second look, to notice the God of love already present, and to say, even after the fact, “Surely the Lord was in this place, and I was unaware.”
